Grasshopper Seeks Archive Research Topics

Hey Everyone:

Jackorions’s post on the Low Notes thread seems good (namely to search the Archives for answers to questions that have been discussed ad nauseum).

As a recent newcomer to the C&F community, I have now figured out how to do this, but as with life in general I’m finding that the true path to learning isn’t in finding the best answers, but rather discovering the best questions to ask. And with respect to whistling, I for one am definitely still searching for the right questions.

If you wizened old timers could list some of the topics that seem to come up endlessly that have been hashed to death in prior threads (you know, the ones that have the same effect as fingernails on a chalkboard when you see them asked yet again by well-intentioned newbies), this may have the double benefit of 1) helping to spare you the tedium of dealing with the same old stuff, and 2) Giving us Newbies a nice list of topics to look at and look for in the Archives…

I’ll bet there’s at least ten of these tired old thread topics out there that you guys could toss out, and that at least half of them are topics that havent even occurred to me yet as things I need to know. Armed with such a list, my newbie bretheren and I could find these threads, read up, learn and go our merry way. And in the future you can point brand new newbies to the Top Ten list and in the process the newbies will see eight other topics that hadnt yet occurred to them that they then read up on and therefore never ask you about and etc…

I dont mean to encourage posts/discussions ragging on newbies or pet peeves about frequently asked questions…I just wonder if we can generate something like a Top Ten Topic list to help guide us well-intentioned newbies on the paths that apparently have already been so throroughly trodden…

Just a thought. And of course, if this Top Ten list already exists and I just havent found it yet, then accept my big hearty “DOH” and please show me the way…

How about “Is it better to learn by ear or by reading music?”

Drum Roll, please, as the tension mounts…

The 2nd Place Runner-Up:
“Does anyone know where I can get the songsheet for the tune called FillInTheBlankReelJigWhatever?”

The 1st Place Runner-Up, who will stand in for Miss NewbieQuestion should she be unwilling or unable to fulfill her duties, or as it turns out have played indiscreet tunes of inappropriate intimacy:
“Can I play a tune in the key of C on D whistle ?”

And the Miss NewbieQuestion Crown will be worn by:
“I’m a Newbie and I want to know what you guys think is the best whistle for me to buy ?”

What a great idea! How about including a list of tweaking how-to’s as well; I kind of hate to ask how to adjust for this or that and though I’ve looked up “tweak” in the archives, its really time consuming going through it all and still not finding what I’m looking for, though I’m sure its been talked about on the board.

stop the presses…there’s a late entry…
“How do I tell if my Whistle is High or Low ?”

… And the answer, of course, is – “yes.”

“How do I put the smilies/pictures in my posts?”

“I just noticed a song key given as Amix. What does that mean?”

Or “Why does my Generation D squwak in the higher registers and what can I do about it?”

The problem is, if we do a real good job with the FAQ, there won’t be much left to talk about at all.

Maybe it’s better to put up with the newbies and get silly.

Let’s not forget this favorite:

“Does anyone know what kind of whistle Andrea Corr plays?”

I know there are some others, but I can’t think of them right now. Maybe I will add some later.

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions…keep em comin.

Neil: I know, but hey, I’m a well-intentioned optimist, but we all know that we’re still gonna get a lot of the same questions even when we compile the list.

Cee: Probably the most valid point, but I for one always enjoy the lamest excuse to have posts of the Angelic One resuface. Now if someone would only manage to get Jennifer Lopez or Salma Hayek to play the whistle…

I concur. A forum FAQ with links to relevant threads would be great.

What kind of recorder does Captain Kirk play in that movie, lamer?
