I do not mind so much that some attempt has been made to rationalize the definition of the term “planet”. Like so many other things in science, new learning requires changing old classification schemes. Demoting Pluto has possibly caught more attention simply because there are more people who have heard of Pluto, whether or not they understand anything else about the arguments.
What bugs me now is, if they can go against something so well-known to the public as Pluto and correct its classification, why can’t they get rid of the stupidity of the term “planetary nebula”? Sorry, just one of my little pet peeves.
There is nothing more cobbled together than astrology, so they can scoff all they like. They can’t even get the number of constellations at the equator right: there are 13, not 12.
I am convinced that astrology is evil, but it’s also not an exact science, from what I’ve heard.
What confuses me is that Jupiter is called the largest planet, but Saturn’s rings stretch farther than Jupiter. I know they don’t consider the rings, but I wonder why not.
No more so than patent medicine, patriotism, and organized religion, or for that matter, any other form of buncombe designed to prey upon the unsuspecting and easily led. The differences between the astrologer, the priest, the patriot and the snake oil salesman are nothing more than their target demographics.
Most practices in Astrology predate the discovery of Pluto so they shouldn’t get too bent out of shape… except for the phonies… wait most of them are phonies
I am not surprised that we would agree they are equivalent in the magnitude of their respective evils, but I suspect there would be less concord regarding what that magnitude might be. I also suspect there is a divergence of opinion as to the definition of at least one of those terms.
Amen… and I would add that evil is most often (though of course not always) in the heart and mind of the beholder … not pointing at you, Cran, but at those who shout and point and jump up and down about the evils of (insert topic here) whilst doing nasty stuff to those around them. It’s all in how you use it, I suppose.
