Practice set with Rogge delrin chanter (2 keys)

David

I went into Ebay.com to get the details of the Childress full set I had noticed a couple of days ago, but it has been taken down, but i found this interesting looking Half Set for sale.

David

The barrel bass drone and the ring key on the chanter suggest the maker knew something. In other words, it doesn’t look like a cheap knock-off from Asia.

The key mounts and turnings on the chanter look a little square and bulky. There’s something familiar about the chanter though.

Barrel Bass drone and looking old with those orange plastic mounts. Could be an early Chris Bayley set but chanter doen’t look like his work
Who else makes barrel style drones maybe 20 or more years ago

Uh..I wouldn’t want to try and play that chanter. the decorative turning is RIGHT up against the tonehole…I imagine it’d be DAMN tough to fit the pinky finger up against the turning…it looks like the rather pronounced turning is about 2mm away from the edge of the tonehole. This is a major pet peeve of mine! I hate designs that don’t take into account human physiology…ergonomics is NOT just a modern invention! One of the most comfortable set of pipes I’ve ever played was an incredible boxwood set by Robert Reid.

I’ve always appreciated the small nuances of Tim Britton’s work. I learned a lot from watching Tim work and examining his pipes. It’s the little details. For example, key blocks should not have a flat surface that lines up with the chanter face…the fingers CURVE around the chanter and the key mounts should not get in the way. Another finishing touch is that the upper left hand tone holes were “relieved” towards the left while the lower right hand notes were relieved to the right. If he was forced to scallop the tone holes he was very careful that the scallops align with the angles of the FINGERS. Scalloping tone holes perfectly perpendicular to the line of the chanter is very uncomfortable. The there’s the right hand thumbrest and the slight scalloping of the back D so that it aligns with the angle of the thumb and the curvature of the thumb pad. I admit unabashedly that I gleefully incorporated these fine touches in my own work!

D’OH! Sorry…didn’t mean to ramble! The point was, that lower decorative turning looks like it would be a major problem!

David Quinn is the only name that springs to mind.

Just spotted the enormous hole in the Bass Drone end mount :astonished:

..that hole could be spotted from space w/the naked eye!

The set dates from around 1978 to 1980 and was made by Douglas Wilkinson and Glen McCarthy. They tended to supply shops such as Lark in the Morning, Hobgoblin, Waltons rather than private customers

To cover some of the points raised. The chanter is based on one by the Taylor brothers that was 14 1/2" long and played around a quarter of a tone sharp. To compensate they lengthened the chanter to just under 15" using the frequency ratio i.e. Actual pitch / desired pitch x length as well as respaced the toneholes accordingly.

The shape of the chanter is down to them following the measurements of a Taylor chanter but instead of ‘normal’ dimensions and then thinning the back d area to give the best chimney depth they have chosen to turn the chanter round to the minimum depth.

Large hole in the puck - probably originally had a wooden ring that has been lost

The only connection with myself is that I gave them the measurements of the Taylor set around 1978. How they are used is up to the maker.
The partnership broke up in the early 80’s but Glen McCarthy carried on making for a short while on his own

Here is one to puzzle over Practice Set

The seller is claiming he made the set, but the chanter looks pakistani to me.

David

And the bello, too.

Suspect chanter is a reworked /mounted Pakitani onebut the rest does not
Bellows looks like it is made from recycled plywood
Cane and plastic reeds Hmmm…

Wording of description shows the inevitable poor grammer / spelling

Anyone heard of this maker

John

Boisvert/O’Hare half set relisted

O’Grady drones relisted

“Practice” must be written with “c”

Those kind of pipes really annoy me. People on a tight budget (and who isn’t with pipes?) can be very disheartened by trying to learn on a poorly made instrument. Plus the guy is an eBay crook. Check his ratings-all the uilleann pipes he has sold are now private feedbacks. And hes from clare?

P.s. I am always very wary of chanters with ivory mounts on the bottom. Surely anyone who played the pipes would realise thats a leaky bottom D?

EDIT: okay I’ve had a peek around his profile and our friend ablerica has bought a number of geffory pipes recently. So buy cheap->fix up->sell on as your own?

…I seem to recall a few of us tracking arrival of a new pipemaker 2 years back. I don’ believe he was in business long…

Anyways, he was taking pakistan chanters, adding his own mounts and then claiming he had made them from scratch.

So, BUYER BEWARE…read the FAQ’s.

There are a few Coyne sets with ivory mounts at the bell. I’ve seen a few reputable modern makers offer this also.

I don’t know how it could cause a leak. The only disadvantage I can see is that the mount would be easier to break/crack if dropped than, say a brass ferrule on the bell.

The Galagher half set has been taken down, looks like someone bought it privately.

David

I’ve played 2 or 3 Gallagher B chanters and liked them very much. It’s a pity Seth doesn’t make them any more.

I wonder if the buyer of this half set intends add regulators and if so, who will make them?
