Hey Pipers and whistlers.

I want to get into the beautiful uilleann piping and would like to buy a practise set that is worth its money and is directly available.

I read here that the makers of the components make good and nice uilleann pipes.

So I would like to ask you experts if you think that this set is a good one for a beginner or should I search somewhere else?

That is an O’Grady chanter. I have yet to play an O’Grady set that hasn’t played nicely and with good tone. I am not wild about the look of the mounts, but that is purely superficial and neither here nor there.

I’ve played 4 or 5 O’Grady chanters (all reeded by NO’G). I would recommend them for a beginner for the following reasons:

  1. The Neil O’Grady makes a light chanter reeds which is relatively easy to play.
  2. O’Grady chanters are not as loud as many other concert pitch chanters, so beginners are less self conscious about playing.
  3. The O’Grady chanters I’ve played were all well made/finished and played in tune.

The aesthetic question has been debated before and in the end it’s a personal choice.

But what bothers me is that sentence about the reeds: “This chanter comes with two reeds which I believe are both by Mr O’Grady and do not appear to have been given final scraping and fitting to the chanter. I have not adjusted the bridles or scraped them.”

Are those reeds not “ready” to be played or is the normal proccess meant that the reeds are not well-rehearsed yet? Or do I have to scrap them myself?

Reeds which are not scraped are not ready to be played. Scraping is one of the final stages in making a reed.
