Hello,
I’m new here and am hoping someone can identify an instrumental song that I’ve had on mp3 forever. I’d like to check out the band, as they sound pretty modern (nice sound quality).
Hi Kristin … That is Track 8 (originally Track 1, Side 2) from The Bothy Band’s first album, “The Bothy Band 1975”. The tunes are 2 jigs: The Tar Road to Sligo, and Paddy Clancy’s.
This was one of THE seminal albums and groups of the Irish trad music revival.
The album is still very much in print, and available (CD/download) directly from Compass Records, Amazon, etc.
Thanks so much! I bought the album. I do have some things by them and thought that song might be theirs, but it was impossible to tell from little snippets and so many songs to choose from. I also like Altan, The Chieftans, and a lot of field recordings, but would love to know of some more bands that have their more upbeat sound (I like the ballads as well, but not as much). I’m also a big fan of uilleann pipes.
PS - Sadtomato is from an R.E.M. song. It was the 30th user name I typed into AOL back in 1994 and the first one that wasn’t taken. I’ve never bothered to change it.
Sure, my username also goes back to that same time, and has nothing to do with music.
Great, I hope you enjoy it. I still have the original vinyl LP.
You have good taste already. You’d probably like Planxty, another seminal band. Also Solas, Lúnasa, Dervish. Maybe Cherish the Ladies, Téada, Danú. And those are all just gateways to harder core stuff.
Hello, I’m just a newbie here. For some of the field recordings older ITM, I found this website to be helpful, and be sure and try the interactive feature http://www.itma.ie/digitallibrary/
