CP: Flutes for April

Its been a busy month for me. This is my flute output for the last 2 weeks. These were all started around April 6th.

Shown are 5 Folk Flutes, 2 small handed blackwood flutes with rings and slides, a left handed boxwood standard flute with rings and slides, a small handed mopane flute with rings and slides (I fit the body to an existing headjoint), and finally, a 6 keyed large holed standard with rings and slide with an alternate keyless body. Everything was just mailed off today.

I am playing with my Standard flute designs some, per feedback from clients. The 2 piece middle joint allows for more adjustment between the hands with respect to each other. My flutes with the stubby footjoint tend to be a bit headjoint heavy. So I’ve started making them with an extended foot with two vent holes. This balances them nicely for the closer hand. It makes no difference for the bottom D but it seems to enrich the middle range of the instrument. I also wanted to widen the difference between these and my Folk Flute design, which is based on the one with the stubby footjoint.

That left handed boxwood flute used up the very last of my curly boxwood I think. The blackwood ones with rings and slides are from some 20+ year old blackwood I rediscovered at my wood supplier’s. I went through the bin and removed anything that could make a flute part and have enough for a number of flutes.

I am off next to do some research paleontology in central and southern California. And take a short break from this. I’m a bit worn out from this bit of work! I’ll be back at it in May.

(note - the warping is from my Canon camera!)

Nice! I really like the coloring of the …is it mopane? I also like the looks of the wide bands on your Flutes.
The top Folk Flute looks shorter, is that just the picture?
I haven’t picked up a flute in years, but yours really tempt me!

Beautiful work Casey.
Enjoy yer bone hunting in Cali, the weather is great.

Casey,
Whats the story with your F and G flutes (requintas)? They ar ementioned in your signature but not on the web page. What is the price range? Say in boxwood no slide or rings? Maybe f and g on the same headjoint.
Anyway been curious.

Yes that folk flute is shorter - but only in the acoustically dead space above the headjoint cork. Usually I cut my headjoints on these to 240mm. But sometimes I’ll use my 250mm headjoints that I usually turn for my more expensive flutes - or sometimes use ones around 230mm. All of them have a center of embouchure to bottom end (sounding) length of 520mm.

Yes the reddish one in Mopane. I still have tons of this - though the supplier provided squares that are fully waxed. Next mont I need to turn a year’s supply round so that it can age over the hopefully hot summer and be ready to use by September or October. I am out of the wood that is all ready to use.

My Requintas in F and G are more or less the same price as my D flutes. Although they use less wood, they take just as much time. Most of the ones I made for folks in Spain were for trades for gaitas. I’ll be doing a run of these in June probably.
