Chieftains documentary on BBC 2 last night

Apologies if this is old and everyone else has seen it ages ago…

I really enjoyed it, even though Paddy and the lads aren’t always my cup of tea. The highlight for me was discovering what a cheeky fella the late Derek Bell was. You totally wouldn’t guess it to look at him!

And it’s always good to see and hear Matt Molloy, whatever the context.

Agreed. It’s just that they still can’t see how awful Long Black Veil was, likewise their collaboration with the Van Man!

I think Kevin Conneff may still have reservations about it. He said (to paraphrase) that when he first heard it he wondered what the hell they had done. Then he said that looking back it was a remarkable thing - or something like that. But something told me that maybe he wanted to add “Overall I think we’d have been better not doing it”.

But then for many people it will have been a doorway into ITM, just as The Corrs and The Pogues have introduced Irish music to people who proceeded to learn more and more until they ended up listening to the real thing. Every cloud, as they say.

Just so long as I don’t have to listen to it.

Ugh. This was the first Chieftain’s CD I bought. And the last.
I have been gifted quite a few, though. So, what does “on BBC2”
mean? Is there a particular show on which they appeared, or did
the government cede control of the network to the lads for a time?

I’m not sure how they came to be on the Beeb. It was earlyish in the evening. My wife answered a phone call from my mother who had called to tell me it was on. Mrs Buddhu proceeded to record it for me as I was in the bath, or in the garden, or under the car, or stuck on the roof or something…

Fine women, both.
