[BUMP] Skip Healy Whistle Class, Session, Dinner - Dec 3, RI

(This is just a reminder in case there’s anyone who didn’t catch this the first time around. Thanks! – Skip)

Hi Everyone,

On Sunday, December 3, I’m going to hold a group class for tin whistle players at my workshop in East Greenwich, RI. This group class will go from 1:00 - 4:00 PM and includes a session and potluck dinner after the class. Liquid refreshments will be compliments of the Healy Flute Company.

The class will be divided into two 90 minute sessions with a break in between. The first half will focus on techniques essential to the novice whitle player such as breathing, posture, hand position, and basic playing techniques.

The second half will focus on the playing of tunes and a study of the different traditional forms of jigs, reels, hornpipes, marches, and slow airs. I will also encourage attendees to play a solo piece for critique and suggestions. I will play one example of each type of tune for recording.

We will finish the afternoon with a session and pot luck supper.

This class is open to all skill levels and only requires a whistle. Notepaper and recording devices are encouraged but not required.

It would be great if each student can also bring one hot dish or heavy appetizers. Email me if you have any questions about food or use of a kitchen.

The fee for three hours of training, the session, dinner, refreshments, and all-around great craic is $80 per person.

Here’s the details in a nutshell:

DATE: Sunday, December 3, 2006
TIME: 1:00 - 4:00 PM (session & meal after)
PLACE: Healy Workshop, 1776 Revolution St., East Greenwich, RI, 02818
PHONE: 401-935-9365
EMAIL: skip@skiphealy.com

Please call or email if you’d like to sign up. I don’t have a hard limit on the number of students but I will stop enrollment if I feel like it’s going to be too crowded.

I’m also going to sponsor an Irish class in the same format on Sunday, November 26. Contact me if you are interested in the flute class.

All the best,
Skip Healy

Sounds interesting. I emailed you for some more info.

I’m a little confused (see avatar). Is this a class to teach the tin whistle or are you teaching tin whistlers the flute?

Hi Shoveler,

No problem. This class is to teach tin whistle, plain and simple.

I’m teaching a separate flute class on November 26.

All the best,
Skip

Hey Great! You may want to edit your post to say that "This class is open to all skill levels and only requires a whistle. That’s what threw me off (but then, I’m easily thrown!)

Ah. Thanks for catching that. It’s fixed now.

All the best,
Skip

Count me in - wow something like this in RI!

(This is just a reminder in case there’s anyone who didn’t catch this the first time around. Thanks! – Skip)

So what’s so hot about Rhode Island?!

I think you should do a whistle/flute workshop in Idaho. Why I just sold a whistle to a guy right here in Idaho just last week. Now there are three of us!

Oh, and there was the guy that drove over from Montana Friday and bought a flute. I bet he’d come back. Whaada ya say Skip?

Doc

We do welcome Idahoans here in RI - Doc. We would love to have the 3 of you visit and you can even bring the guy from Montana!

Hi Doc!

I’d come out to do a workshop in a heartbeat. If you organize it, I’ll be there. In fact if people are interested in my coming anywhere to do a 2 day workshop with flute one day and whistle the next, contact me off list and we’ll set it up. My Wind on the Bay event has become quite popular but I know not everyone has time to come to beautiful R.I. I am more than happy to come to you though!

All the best,
Buy more stuff!!!

Skip Healy

Well we may have to take you up on that some time. I suppose we could invite the Utahns if we had to.

Doc

I suppose you’ve never considered doing a workshop in Sweden?
Oh well…

I’ve got the impression there are very few tin whistle classes here. Guess I’ll have to make do by myself!

Hi Frogwing,

Honestly, Sweden really isn’t out of the question. I went to the Basel Tattoo (http://www.baseltattoo.ch/) this past year and did some performing and teaching there.

If I were to make a trip to Sweden, then I’d probably want to combine whistle and flute classes with some kind of folk festival and/or some other performances.

But yeah, I’ll happily travel for these types of gigs.

All the best,
Skip

Ah, neat =)

You should come for the Medieval Week on Gotland, that runs every august. The biggest medieval stuff arrangement there is in sweden.
Maybe not exactly the right epoch for tin whistles.. but all kinds of people show up so..

Maybe there’s some kind of big folk festival as well, I haven’t looked so much for it.

I’ve never seen this kind of session-culture in Sweden either so maybe I should just go over to Ireland instead.. not that far after all.
