As You can see, I’m tryin’ to get a hang on Celtic music typical for “the Colonies”
- so, now, I’d like to learn more about Boston fiddling - maybe even more interesting, when not fiddling only, but entire bands! And not those, who try to be as Irish as possible, but really take care to achieve a typical Boston-sound. Any suggestions?
Yeah, got some of his stuff since there are some connections towards Cape Breton (I’m pretty into celtic-Canadian stuff…). Anyone else?
If you’re into Cape Breton stuff then you probably know that some of the legends of Cape Breton fiddling spent (and in some cases are still spending) most of their adult lives in Boston - Bill Lamey, Joe Cormier, Jon Campbell. Jerry Holland was born and grew up there.
I’m not sure whether there’s an identifiable “Boston sound” as regards Celtic fiddle music, but you might be interested in the group Trì, which includes fiddler Doug Lamey (Bill’s grandson). They have heavy Cape Breton and Irish influences but also try to blend these with their own Bostonian sensibilities. Check them out at http://www.triceol.com/TriMusic/Home.html
Probably not what you’re after, but there’s also the Boston Scottish Fiddle Club http://www.bsfclub.org/
You might check out Boston fiddler Lissa Schneckenburger:
Especially the Phantom Power album, which is her contradance band configuration, fiddle and piano.
She played a dance here in San Diego a few years ago, to rave reviews. I’m sorry I missed the performance …
