I play the bouzouki and mandolin and the equivalent web based meeting spots for both instruments (www.mandolincafe.com & http://www.xs4all.nl/~cittern/) have released several CD’s of material from amongst their subscribers/vistors. I think its about time Chiff and Fipple did something similar. Any thoughts?
I have thought about this. In fact, what I REALLY would like to do is to edit a compilation CD of tracks from hard-to-obtain CDs: Smaller record companies, European labels, self-published CDs. For example, C&F subscriber has a CD out and it’s just a CRIME that it can’t get wide circulation. The technology of creating and producing the CDs is no longer a problem. I think the hassle would be the legal side of getting the rights on all the individual tracks.
Dale
Dale, don’t go there ,it’s an absolute minefield.I had the same idea a few years ago and I’m still quakeing from the experience. You’ll end up wishing you never started. If this was a perfect world this would be a fantastic idea. The official beaurocracy is enough to make you want to give up whistling and play the Banjo (no offense to Banjo players)but you get my drift.
Tread carfully Dale.
Phil.
How about Chiff&Fipple becoming a distributor for some of these hard-to-find CDs? A “Buy Whistle CDs Here” link on the website would be great.
p.s. Dale, I know this would be a big project (and I also know that it’s not one that I would be able to undertake myself), but if you’re not interested in doing it, maybe there’s someone else on the board who would be capable of and interested in handling the business side of things?
Why would it be such a big problem? The Cittern/Bouzouki guys have released three CD’s and they have far fewer members than here. I have a digital portastudio at home and would be willing to contribute at least one track.
Dale,
I believe someone on the Woodenflute mailing list is doing exactly what you mentioned. I can’t remember who right now, but his last message said he almost had the project finished (if I recall correctly). Perhaps he could give you an accurate idea of exactly what it might take to bring such a comilation to fruition.
Now if I could just remember the name…
I’ll get it to you when it comes to me.
Loren
My instincts are that Phil is right about this. It’s a shame. I will contact the woodenflute people.
What is the Woodenflute mailing list?
Brent
Loren,
His name is Philippe Varlet and his email is philvar@erols.com and his website is http://celticgrooves.homestead.com/CGhome.html I talked to him for a while over the phone and he is very helpful. I ordered John Skeltons “A Few Tunes” with tunebook and a couple hard to find Flute and Fiddle albums.
Craig,
Thanks, that sounds about right. I was thinking it was either Philippe or Kevin Krell, just couldn’t remember which.
Hey let us know how the John Skelton thing is when you get it, would you please? It sounded very cool from the discussion on the list.
Dale,
Yeah, it probably would be a ton of trouble, but at least you can contact Philippe and to confirm it and sleep easy knowing ![]()
Brent,
The woodenflute mailing list is like this message board, only it’s for wooden flute players, makers and enthusiasts, and the all the messages go out via e-mail. To learn more or sign up got to http://www.woodenflute.com

If we stuck with traditional tunes, we shouldn’t have any problems, aside from the logistics of getting all the recordings together. I would be willing to help out. I’m not much of a player yet, but I could do decent renditions of Down by The Sally Gardens, The Kesh Jig, and All for Me Grog.
One thing we could do is setup a site on MP3.com, which provides CD production services. They charge for some of their services, but maybe we could work out a deal with them.

There was also some talk going around of a possible recording of original tunes from C&F members. I’m only me, but I think that would be much more interesting…and probably a lot more work, as well…

Kevin Krell is working on a compilation CD of woodenflute players - and seems to be close to finishing the project (Sounds like a terrific 2 CD set - I want one!
)
Philippe Varlet’s shop specializes in hard to find Irish CD’s.
Two different things, two different people. But both have been great contributors to the woodenflute list.
