C&F Tunebook?

It occurs to me that many C&Fers have probably written some great tunes. Is there any interest in compiling a Chiff and Fipple tunebook? This could either be an online database, or perhaps an actual paper book, or both.

Paul that’s a great idea! I have often thought that there should also be a tunebook that contains the traditional tunes that are frequently discussed on the board. There seems to be a consistent body of session tunes that are regularly mentioned and it would be nice to have something to refer to even though it would never be complete.

Great idea! I have thought about this a couple of times, too. We could have section of favorite tunes or sets and a section of originals. I would be willing to help produce it. If we want printed copies, we would need some way to cover costs. Dale, C&F merchandise?

I’d be willing to help, also.

Great idea Paul. That would really “bind” us together…no pun intended. Gm

A similar operation can be seen on http://www.concertina.net (go to the tune-o-tron). This set up works well and everybody can add or make prints of whatever is in the database. You could wonder about the viability of a printed book, considering a lot of the tunes discussed here are very run of the mill and are easily found in other sources, printed or on-line. Great idea though.

I think that would be great! Even though many of the tunes can be found other places, it would be fun to have the official C&F source book.

But only if Dale will put his sloth picture (perhaps with some modifications by Thom?) on the cover.

Tom

The tune book is an excellent idea, but it already exists on the Tune-of-the-month page on Chiff and Fipple’s main site. It is there under the last listing “PDF” you can save it to file or open it on the desktop.

All the tunes that are archived are there all indexed on the second page. What would be nice is to have copyright permission of our members who have composed tunes, to let the Chiff and Fipple Power that be – Dale to publish them.

If someone wants to do, say a new cover for the PDF file in colour or a nice knotwork design, we could all save the cost and print it ourselves at home.

Oh! If you haven’t been to the main board lately especially the Tune-of-the-month page, it has been updated to January 2002.

I think everyone is getting off Brewerpaul’s point.

This is a fairly original idea to this point

Tune-of-the-month, concertina.net and all the other tune sources of public domain, traditional or otherwise do not have only ORIGINAL tunes WRITTEN by C&F members.

The key being WRITTEN meaning original compositions and not transcribed or otherwise. If they are original then the closet composers would be able to get copyrights for them. It would then come down to see if C&F people would be willing to contribute their original work to the project.

As far as that goes, I have composed a couple of hornpipes and a couple of jigs. They still need some refining so I can’t submit them now, but I would like to work on them. I would be willing to put these primitive tunes into a project once they have fermented a bit. Any other would-be composers out there?

Yep. I am currently working on a couple of tunes.

I’ve made up a couple of tunes I’d be willing to contribute. And as for the cyber vs. book debate…there’s just something like a real-life book in your lap that’s satisfying to me, much more so than something I printed off the net. Real books are good for the soul, and well worth a few bucks.

This is a fun idea! I like the idea of keeping it all (or at least primarily)original tunes.

I have at least one jig and one reel that I’d contribute. I just finished with the recording guy mixing a set with the jig and a trad reel. It sounded fairly good if I do say so myself. Maybe that’s because someone else was playing whistle and I played bouzouki.

I think that would be a geat idea. One thing to think about: If people are going to be putting orginal tunes in the book and/or cyber-active thing, try to also have a recording of the tunes so people can listen to them. I know if I just have the sheet music to a tune I have never heard of(or even one I have) it is almost impossible to get the rythem correct without a good recording of the tune.

I wonder what the holder of the copyright on this pic thinks about posting it here

Yes, I did indeed mean tunes composed by C&Fers-- there are TONS of other tune books of trad tunes.
I have one reel I could contribute ( The Musical Chiropodist).
