I am in the early stages of creating a low power FM radio station for our very small, rural upstate NY community. Already, though, I’ve been thinking about programming - and the fact that it’s unlikely that this community run station will be in a position to pay for ASCAP/BMI licensing.
So, I was wondering about the possibility of putting together a celtic music program featuring folks from this board playing music that is in the public domain. Minimal to no compensation, but a chance to perform and receive an on-air credit (albeit to a very limited audience.)
What do you think? Would something like that be feasible/of interest to anyone?

That sounds kind of cool. My musical partner and I have been recording on minidisc in the livingroom whenever we practice together. Everytime I collect a better rendition of a tune, I update this homemade cd. (I’m on version 7 right now.) We’re going to start recording on better equipment soon. I’ve given the cd away to a number of people who enjoyed it. It certainly has warts and rough spots, but I’ve got such good taste in tunes, it makes up for it. A compensation for playing stuff from cd’s like that would be to give credit info including how someone could order a cd. That would work for me. (I still have to finish a cover design. I’ve been giving them away in ziplock baggies. (When I get a cover design, I’ll feel better about selling them. 
)

I play in a couple of bands, we’d be happy to get some radio play no matter how small the market is, look up BOWI and forgotton celts on mp3.com.
I know 3 artists here locally that have produced their own albums with their own / other bands and sell them at fairs and concerts, and I’ve probably got another 3 or 4 weeks and I’ll have enough to compile a nifty collections CD of local hoolie sessions that I and several of my friends and local performers play at.
So I think it’s a great idea, and I don’t think you’ll have a problem with people giving you stuff to play… free air time to get your music out? Sounds good to me. If nothing else, might offer a 30 second ad spot or something to a bigger name band or something.

I am considering making a Christmas CD for some of my friends and relatives this year, and maybe putting a track or two on the upcoming “Chiffy Christmas II” CD. (There will be another one this year, won’t there?) I think we should send up a copy of CC2 for some airplay, what do you think?

Unfortunately, I don’t live in NY (or anywhere near it for that matter), and the only thing I could possibly record & send are extremely low-quality (scratchy, low-fi) tapes. 
This is encouraging! If you don’t mind sending me your e-mail addresses (wfredette_at_stny.rr.com - replace the at with @, of course), I’ll compile a contact list.
We could easily promote CDs, etc. on air. Maybe even include some artist interviews. It could be a regular plug-fest.
Count me in! Depending on timing I ( and probably my wife) would be happy to join in with some other trad musicians for an on air session.
If you want something different, we could also provide some pretty fair recorder duets-- mostly Baroque. In fact, although I haven’t asked them yet, I wouldn’t be surprised if our whole Baroque consort ( 3 recorders, harpsichord and viola da gamba) would be willing to do a set for you.
Then, there’s that Fiddler’s Tour that you and I have already e-mailed about. Search them out on Google, and ask Sue about it.
Also, you could sift through the Clips and Snips site and email people for permission if you hear something you’d like to play.
