Antique Pratten/Prowse-like 8-key for sale

This is a flute that I bought from Jon C a few years ago. Its from the 19th century, probably london, but is unmarked except for “GP” on the low C# key. It’s made of cocus, with 8 blockmounted keys made of (I think) german silver. The keys have been repadded and all work well. I find it to be a bit of a trick to get the low C and C# to sound, but I think it just requires practice.

At some point this flute was overhauled by Patrick Olwell; I’m told he put the blackwood lip plate on the original headjoint, which has some stable crack repairs. Jon did some work on the tenons and sockets, and later on Daniel Deitch wrapped the upper tenon with carbon fiber which should keep the repair quite stable. That joint is threadwrapped so the fit between it and the headjoints can be kept secure but not too tight. It is currently threaded for the original headjoint.

I also have an unlined blackwood headjoint for it, made by Jon C. It is a nice match for the flute and has a nice warm tone to it. It’s a lighter piece of blackwood and in most lighting looks like the cocus wood. You’d need to wrap some extra thread around the tenon to make this headjoint fit.

It is a really easy playing flute and sounds great. You can hear my play it (with the original headjoint) in the following youtube vids:

I’m asking $1200 for it, which is a bit less than I’ve put into it, and it includes a doskosport pistol case. Shipping is free within the US.

Reasons for selling: to offset other purchases, for the most part, but with flutes in D, C and F, I really don’t need the keys. These days I either just play my hammy or my Jon C delrin flute. and too much blackwood in the house.

Please PM or email me if interested.

Bump. Price reduced to $1000. I’m going to Ireland soon so I can hand deliver it if anyone over there wants to meet up with me…

Oh, thats a good price.

The flute is still for sale. $1000 is less than half the price of that Pratten that just sold, and I would bet that this flute is nearly as good. I have played several original prattens and I don’t think there’s that much of a difference.

Order now in time for christmas! Otherwise it will be on hold until I get back in a few weeks.

Update: Sale pending. Check back in early January…

I’m back from Ireland, and the flute is now sold.
