For anyone interested in a nice solid antique 8key flute, before I put it up to eBay in a week or so. I have $1,200 into it and that’s all I’m asking for it here. The eBay reserve will be $1,500.
It’s a no-frills flute by Clementi & Co.
It is not a Nicholson model, has medium holes and the keys are German Silver. It is cocus and a couple well-repaired barrel cracks.
I used the headpiece for a long time on a Pratten until I had that one done. It plays pretty well.
It was made at the end of the Clementi run, c. 1826.
All I’ve done is repad it and clean it up here and there.
It’s got a case, although not original. It’s a converted Bundy flute case that I got from David Levine and for which I have no use, so let’s give the Clementi a home.
Let me give David a plug. I purchased one of his personal flutes several weeks ago, and it is wonderful. As always (this wasn’t the first instrument I’d purchased from him), the transaction went smoothly. I’ve also gotten some great advice from him on restoration, valuation, and other things.
This seems to be a very reasonable deal for anyone looking for a fully keyed flute right now - I am amazed that no-one has bitten your hand off yet. There is often talk on this board with people bemoaning the cost and waiting time for 6 or 8 keyed instruments. Here’s your chance, people!
Damned with faint praise? Can you describe "pretty well?
I had it out yesterday and I have to say, it’s pretty nifty.
very very much a Rudall c.1830 sound.
and I’m convinced it’s never had a day of playtime in its life. The hole edges are just too clean and too sharp.
email me private and I’ll make a sound clip of the flute for you.
(by the way…plays down to C)
