Anti-war tunes

Can anyone suggest tunes for an anti-war demonstration?
They’re becoming more popular but the rock music crowd seem to have cornered the market.
Mine is likely to be a three-minute slot.
Thanks,
Max

You could play (The Rambling Pitchfork)…

the fox chase

oh sorry
thats too long

Give Peace a Chance - John Lennon
Monster - Steppenwolf
I Feel I’m Fixin’ to Die Rag - Country Joe and the Fish

You might have a bit of trouble with the B part of Monster if you don’t have any keys on your chanter.

What are you looking for in an anti-war tune Max? Modern Folk/Rock, airs, reels/jigs, Folk Ballads? Something slow? Something fast?

Hi Max

How about Flowers of the Forest. It is definately an anti war tune, albeit a GHB tune, and sounds haunting and lovely when played on the UPs.

David

An awesome one for ya…

“The Patriot Game”

The Kingston Trio plays the tune. Great words and a pretty tune. Very strong. The theme is Anit-war with Ireland and Northern Ireland in mind.
I don’t know where the Kingston Trio would have picked this tune up but I doub’ they wrote it.

The Kingston Trio…An experience of America before the time when patriotism and peace did not conflict each other. IMHO the true American ideals.

you’ve also got ‘Masters of War’ by Bob Dylan

and

‘War Pigs’ by Black Sabbath’

John Lennon’s “So This Is Christmas… (war is over)”.

Green Fields of France. (Fureys did it with pipes in it)

Written by Eric Bogle

Well how do you do Private William McBride,
Do you mind if I sit here down by your graveside?
And rest for awhile beneath the warm summer sun,
I’ve been walking all day and now I’m nearly done
I see by your gravestone you were only nineteen
When you joined the glorious fallen in 1916;
Well I hope you died quick and I hope you died clean,
Or, young Willie McBride, was it slow and obscene?

Refrain:
Did they beat the drum slowly,
Did they play the fife lowly?
Did they sound the Death March
As they lowered you down?
Did the bugle play
“The Last Post And Chorus?”
Did the pipes play
“The Flowers Of The Forest?”

Did you leave 'ere a wife or a sweetheart behind?
In some faithful heart is your memory enshrined?
And although you died back in 1916,
In that faithful heart are you forever nineteen?
Or are you a stranger without even a name,
Enclosed forever behind a glass pane,
In an old photograph, torn, and battered and stained,
And faded to yellow in a brown leather frame?
Refrain:

Ah the sun now it shines on these green fields of France,
The warm summer breeze makes the red poppies dance,
And look how the sun shines from under the clouds;
There’s no gas, no barbed wire, there’re no guns firing now.
But here in this graveyard is still No Man’s Land,
The countless white crosses in mute witness stand
To man’s blind indifference to his fellow man,
To a whole generation that was butchered and damned.
Refrain:

Ah, young Willie McBride, I can’t help wonder why,
Did all those who lay here really know why they died?
And did they believe when they answered the call,
Did they really believe that this war would end war?
For the sorrow, the suffering, the glory, the pain,
The killing and dying were all done in vain,
For, young Willie McBride, it all happened again,
And again and again and again and again.
Refrain:

Cheers,

Will you be playing the tune on the uilleann pipes?

<smack_forehead>How could I forget?</smack_forehead>

Edwinn Starr’s “War (What is it Good For?)”

Why dont you play “going home”..oh,…wait, thats a warpipe song that I play for the funerals of all the guys/girls coming home in body bags…before you protest..think of all the boys/girls that are over " there"…what song would you play for them?

One of my favorite songs of his. I used to perform that, as well as 'And The Band Played “Waltzing Matilda” ', many years ago now.

Both written as Anti-War songs - so you couldn’t get better than that for playing on the pipes.

Cheers,

DavidG

Agreed!

What about Paddy’s Lament as sung by Sinead O’Connor.

Sounds good on the pipes too. :tomato:

(Edit: I removed the lyrics. Sorry for any offence. It wasn’t intended. The tune is nice and does sound good on the pipes.)

How about “Over There” by George M. Cohan.

I guess not… OOps Its not anti-war I suppose.

getting to political here and I wish people would stick to the music and the pipes and not look for excuses to opinionate their personal political views on every website.

How about a tune to play in protest in front of abortion clinics??
