Abells for sale

Blackwood A and D, perfect shape, a couple of months old. They go for $350 resp. $300.

Wonderful finish, really excellent work of arts and sound to match (start to sound like a pro commercial eh?).

Reason for selling (if someone cares) is I´m on this quest for the perfect whistles (ha ha ha) and I have had a bunch of cheapies and now my Abells + my Copeland Sterling Low and High D. I will most probably own Abells again the hole 5 whistle set, but I have Rose D and Overton Low D comming soon and I feel I have to draw a line somewhere so I do not end up with a collection like
JessieK .

I love these whistles but want to try several before making up my mind on which suits my taste best.

Will be interesting to compare the Rose to Abell and Sterling D, and the Overton big hole tunable Low D to my Sterling Low D.

I really try to control this obsessive whistle thing and I try to tell myself that I will only have one Low D and High D when I´m done… moahahhahahaaaa. well, I´ll try at least

I´m also on the list to try out the McGee EuroRAF, that will be an expensive delightful experience I believe.

Insert the correct symbol between (), pretty obvious right?

I would suggest you hold off on selling until you get the new ones and compare. Then, keep whichever ones you like best. I say this because I have the Abells and they ain’t goin’ nowhere.
Tony

Hi Pan,

Abells are known for quite a wide variation in sound and playability characteristics. So, how would you describe your Abells? Pure, chiffy, airy? Do they take a lot of air, or are they easy-blowing?

Cheers,
Jens

Tony,

thanks for the tip, but I rather not have so much money tied up at the same time. Besides if I decide for the Abells in the end, I would like a complete set, or at least A/Bb and C/D. I would have to ship the whistles to Abell for fitting the extra bodies if I keep the ones I have, so I thought; might as well let them go and order a full set later on if I decide to go that route.

Jens,

I would describe them as slightly chiffy and the A a little breathy. The A is very warm and mellow. Both requires less air than the Copelands, and they have that backpressure thing going on.

/Peter

What about volume, compared to the Copelands ?

Zubivka,

the Abell D is just a tiny bit lower in volume than the Sterling D. Abell is a little more even in volume between the octaves, where the copeland is little higher in the 2nd octave compared to Abell.

The Copeland is a little brighter (more enrgy in the middle of the audioband), making it a better session instrument I guess, as it cuts thru (spelling?) a little better.

The Abell is easier to play perfectly in tune. I think this is due to the back pressure that stabilizes the note. The Copeland has less resistance so its easier to blow to much or to little, but in the end it´s just a matter of practising of course.

Initially the octave transitions on the Abell was easier/cleaner, but my Copeland has been visiting “Dr Michael” for a revoicing, and now they are equally well behaved. When I first received the Abell it fast became my favourite high D, but after revoicing of the Sterling, I think it´s a dead race.

/Peter

I for one will be VERY interested in your comparison of the Abell and Rose. I’ve had a Rose for 3y now, and a year ago I tried a full Abell 5 whistle set and rated the Rose as better than the lot. But that was IMHO…keep us posted

nickt,

as Tony suggested it would be “best” to have both whistles side by side, however I don´t think I will have a problem sorting out the difference even if it´s a month between them so to speak.

I think that the Rose pureness I´ve heard about can suit me. Some of the nicest clipps on the net I´ve heard are Mick Woodruff´s with his Rose (excuse me Mick if I spell your name wrong). The interesting question to me is if the pureness of the Rose compared to Abell (the Abell is not THAT dirty IMO but has a slight chiff) takes away some of the charm that is there in the Abell(yuck what a terrible sentence:-)).

Will report back as soon as the Rose comes home  I also have an Overton Low D on order.

Right now except for the Abells I only have the Copelands, and I will keep them until both the Rose and Overton is here for comparison. I think the Sterling Low D is a “lifetime” keeper, but I´m not sure on the soprano D. If I had to pick one only soprano D I think it would be a wooden whistle as Abell or Rose, but the Copeland is extremly good as well so I guess I´ll have at least two soprano D, the Copeland and one wooden.

Would be nice to try the Sindt also for that soft really chiffy sound.

/Peter

I play my Abell and Rose side by side, and to me they have completely different sounds and playing characteristics. There is virtually nothing about them that I can say is the same other than the fact they’re both blackwood. Rose is achingly pure, extremely sensitive to the slightest change, and moderately loud. The Abell has more overtones, takes more conscious effort to change octave, bend notes, and such, and is moderately quiet. They are both very very high on my play list.

tyghress,

thanks for your input, I can´t wait to try the Rose.

You have a Copeland soprano D now also, right?

Seems like these three is the most highly regarded D´s and therefore my choice to try them all out.

/Peter

Will put these whistles up for sale at some “commercial” board within a few days if they do not go here.

Thought I should give C&F´ers the chance first.

/Peter

Sorry for this relative lack of interest.
If the A had only been part of an A+Bb set… :frowning:

What’s a commercial board?

Zubivka,

you can buy the A and order an extra body from Chris. When the Bb body is ready for delivery, you send the A to Chris for fitting the Bb body and viola, a A/Bb set
Chris says he use to do the job in a day or so, so it´s a quick fix.

Blackhawk,

I meant something like e-bay, hard to find the right words sometimes

/Peter

Ah, I get it now, thanks!

Peter,
I may be interested in the “A”. I would like to make you an offer. E-mail me at elkcreek@infinet.com
Thanks,
John

Bumpelibump!

sorry, just once, ok

/Peter

Well, they didn’t sell, Pan. When do they go on Ebay?

he he blackhawk, well that´ll be within a few days, to busy right now.

Will you be there to bid?

No, thanks anyway Peter, but the waiting list is only 3 months long (I just got an email from Mr. Abell) and the price is the same you’re asking. I can wait. Good luck on your sale.
