Workshops of Breton/Irish flute?

A few months ago, I asked about flute workshops in the US and received a helpful list. Now I’m considering attending some festivals in France this summer and would appreciate recommendations for good workshop options there, particularly if they are focused on Breton music.

It’s still a bit early to know if there will be any Breton music flute workshops this summer, but there should be one during the Assembllées Galèzes festival from July 14 to 19, 2025. Last year Jean-Michel Veillon was the teacher. He also sometimes organize himself flute workshops so you should ask him : https://www.jmveillon.net/fr/accueil/ .

Hi, I attended a Jean-Michel Veillon Breton flute playing workshop in 2007. It was at an Irish centre in London during the afternoon before a concert in the evening. I recorded it, if you’re interested I could send you the mp3’s.

Offtopic a bit but several years ago I attended the workshop given by a Breton piper.

He didn’t speak English, and none of us spoke French.

So it ended up being a demonstration (rather than a workshop per se) with him playing a load of tunes and not saying anything.

Every tune he played was Scottish, the normal modern Highland Pipe Band repertoire.

To my astonishment, the other people attending the workshop thought that it had been a presentation of traditional Breton music. (That’s how the workshop was listed in the programme, something like “Traditional Breton Pipe Music”.)

The thing is, that piper had been performing earlier that day with a Breton folk band playing Breton music!
