Wooden Flute Obsession 2 Updates

Scrolling down the artist info page makes me wonder if the whole WFO project isn’t a marketing device for Sam Murray’s flutes…
Micah

Luck of the draw. These are the artists who YOU FOLKS picked, who were available for this volume, and these are the flutes they happen to play. I’ll try to fill in the remaining as yet unknown instruments, and we may get a different picture. Sam is still welcome to send me a flute, though.

Re: Shipping: I’ve caught up on all PayPal orders today, and have sent out some of the courtesy & artist participant copies. Still a lot to do there, as well as promotional, airplay & reviewer copies.

It was really meant in jest, Kevin. I’m a huge fan of WFO, although with the release of Vol. 2, I’m a bit behind now (not for long.) Seriously, however, I think you do deserve a Murray flute for your efforts!
Micah

Got mine. It’s terrific.

Kevin,
I plan to order a copy when I get a chance.
I’m curious though, where did you get a recording of Peter Molloy playing? I didn’t know he’d made any recordings available (though I have been out of the country for almost two years and we’ve been out of touch). What tunes does he play on the CD?
Best,
Chris

WFO2 has been a recording project, with 25 new recordings, rather than just a compilation of existing tracks. Some of the artists managed recordings on their own, or with friends, studio & otherwise. Where essential to facilitate it, I arranged studio time. Peter sent me this set of jigs, and although unmastered, he was happy to have Grey Larsen handle that aspect of it. Peter should definitely put something out.

I think the Pete Molloy recording is the highest-quality one in the CD. Not just the playing, but the recording itself was terrific. Whoever did it knew what he was doing or was lucky.

Hmm, i just reread what Kevin wrote. I bet it was Grey’s mastering that did the trick.

Received my two CD’s to-day. Three days to Canada. I bought the special deal. Faultless disks so far no glitches at all. This is in my view a remarkable accomplishment for you Kevin, one you can be more than just a little proud. Must have been a monumental amount of work and the standards you have maintained are very high. I find every track a delight, so many outstanding players.

I’m just up the road in London and I still haven’t seen mine yet. Maybe tomorrow …

It is great stuff and a wonderful addition to the flute library. I only wish that the liner notes contained more real information about the players and the circumstances of the recording, rather than Hammy’s literate and philosophical disquisition on electronic media.
Who are these people? Youth wants to know.

Kevin decided to put the detailed information on the Web instead of in the insert. This way he kept the cost down (printing is usually the most expensive part of producing a CD, i kid you not) and was able to keep the information updated.

There’s extensive information (albeit somewhat cryptic) here:
http://www.worldtrad.org/WFO2_CD2.htm
The little icons under the artist’s name have hyperlinks when that kind of informaiton is available.

Not to minimize Kevin’s achievement, but not everyone who will buy the WFO has access to a computer. This is expecially true of people in rural areas in the west of Ireland.
It doesn’t seem to me that more solid info on the liner would take up more room than Hammy’s contribution. Better notes would be more valuable, both to the players on the CDs and to the listeners, than what Hammy has to say. This is not to say that what Hammy has to say isn’t interesting and relevant. It just doesn’t tell us who the players are, where they live, when they recorded the tunes. This is important to us all, as students of the music.

Oh, OK, sorry. I misunderstood. I thought you were looking for the information, but you were in fact making a suggestion to Kevin on how you think he should have done the CD.

You may want to send him a PM to make sure he reads it.

I received mine yesterday… it had arrived last Thursday :boggle: . My wife brings the little envelope to my desk saying, “This came for you.”
And what did I say? Well, I said, “Thanks”.

Then tore it open like Christmas morn.

Thanks Kevin for all the hard work.

If I had more of a budget, I suppose the liner notes could be more extensive. I can certainly beef up the website info (which does have built-in Google searches about the flute players).

Anyway, what did you want to know - maybe I can tell you?

Kevin Krell

OK, later message noted. Here’s my explanation: it’s difficult to get accurate information from the artists, many of whom aren’t too chatty on the phone or in email. It often takes a bit of digging to get tune names (and composers), and which flute was actually being played for a particular track. Then, there’s a tendency to tell stories , and I’m never sure when my leg is being pulled.

You can see how much space just the basic track info takes, and with Hammy’s notes I didn’t have room in the same format for album titles (where previously published tracks). Just imagine how much space would be needed for 44 players biographies, etc. Printing (and the graphic design for it) does indeed come at a high cost, at least for manufacture here in the U.S..

I’ve been listening to it for a few days now and I can safely say you’ve outdone yourself Kevin. I think this is perhaps better than the first volume.

Finally got volumes 1 & 2 (after paying Customs their blood tithe). Oh, man, this is bad. Half way through the first track I suddenly realized I was listening with my head cocked to the left. It was totally subconsious, as if some inner voice had said, “Assume the position!” Am I alone afflicted, or is this normal amongst the flute-stigmatized?

djm

That’s funny!

BTW, how bad is the customs fee? Is there a theshold amount at which they do not charge you (such as if the bundle were split & shippied separately)? I think actually that in most countries I ship to a fee is never collected.

Kevin Krell

Kevin, I’m not sure. Sometimes I get dinged, sometimes I don’t. If you post no value sometimes they let it by. This time it was CDN$13.16; not a lot, but its the thought that counts.

Lovin’ it! I was grabbed right by the first track of the first volume.
