Windows media for mac -- aarrrggh

I cannot for the life of me seem to download either the final Windows Media Player for Mac nor the Flip4Mac Quicktime plug-in. In Firefox i get

Firefox can’t find the server at download.microsoft.com.

and in Safari i get a similar message. I’ve tried emailing Microsoft but they can’t seem to find anything wrong, and, hey i’m on a mac so why should they care, right?

Any ideas? Is it my ISP (Comcast, i can’t imagine they’d block access to Microsoft)?

If you click this: http://download.microsoft.com does it give
you the same message? Or does it redirect to an actual webpage?

EDIT: I was able to download the file called
WM Components 2.1.2.72.dmg
on my Sun box. I assume that’s what you need. If you’re still
having problems, I could email it to you, or put it up on my
webspace emporarily..

yes, i get the same message. also i just tried my wife’s windows laptop and it can’t get through either.

if you could email me the file that would be awesome! i’ll PM you. thanks!

Yeah, that sounds like an ISP problem. Maybe they disable the kind
of redirect that’s being done. When I go to download.microsoft.com
it redirects me to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads
Are you also unable to go to that URL?

Anyway, I’ve sent you the file in case you can’t resolve the URL issue…

I can get to the http://www.microsoft.com/downloads URL. When i try to go through the links to get to the file, i get sent to the download.microsoft.com URL and then i get the error message.

Anyway, thank you very very much for sending me the file, and i think i’ll email Comcast to see what’s up with the redirect problem.

Thanks again for your help.

the problem might be the DNS server and not the ISP

the ISP would be asking the DomainNameServer for the address assigned to the URL

Didn’t really want to know?

The problem may also be any anti-hacker software you may be running if it doesn’t like the form of the redirect.

I couldn’t get the page on my wife’s Windows machine, either, though.

OTOH, i find it hard to fathom why Comcast wouldn’t allow access to the Microsoft downloads page.

Might be just another South Florida thing…

I was thinking about this, and I seem to remember having a problem
getting to downloads.microsoft.com a couple weeks ago. I’m having
no problems now. I think Microsquish may have changed the IP on
that site, and the new one hadn’t propogated to my DNS server yet.
Now that the DNS is finally up-to-date, I have no problems. I’ll bet
that in a few days, once Comcast’s DNS updates, you’ll be able to see
it without difficulty.
