Hi all-- on my office computer (where I’m writing this) all of a sudden a lot of little graphics don’t show up. All I get is that little red x in a square.
As I type here, I see that little X for The Hunger Site, and this happens on most websites etc. People’s avatars show up that way too.
This machine runs Win 98, and my browser is Internet Explorer, via AOL. I’ve already cleared the browser cache etc. I last used the computer last Thurs and it was working fine. I’ve added or subtracted nothing from the system.
Any help would be welcomed!

This behavior can occur if one of the following conditions is true:
The Web page includes an image type that is not supported by Internet Explorer.
The Show Pictures check box is not selected on the Advanced tab of the Internet Options dialog box, or the Toggle Images.exe Web accessory was used to disable images in Internet Explorer.
The image is displayed based on a script, ActiveX control, cookie, Java applet, or HTTP referral information, and your computer or network is configured to block one or more of these features. For example, you may have Internet Explorer or Symantec Corporation’s Norton Internet Security (NIS) or Norton Personal Firewall (NPF) 2002 configured to block one or more of these features.
Internet Explorer cannot determine the character set (also called code page or encoding) that is used by the Web page, or a file or registry key required to display the Web page with the appropriate character set may be missing or damaged. By default, Internet Explorer uses the character set that is specified in the HTTP content type that is returned by the server, the character set specified by the meta element in the Web page document, or your Encoding preference if no HTTP content type is returned by the server and no meta element is specified in the Web page document.

that 3rd one seems quite likely.
I’d certainly investigate that one before bothering to do what I said in the other thread.
Nope, the “show pictures” box IS checked. None of the others make sense either-- why would this just start to happen on it’s own? The image types are simple jpg, gif, etc. I haven’t changed any security settings or browser settings either. Mysterious and frustrating.
If it’s any help, the computer is also very slow today-- slower than usual. Although it has Win 98 in it, it’s not really a Win 98 vintage machine-- I had that version installed because I had to run an old DOS program that I was told wouldn’t run on later versions.
Yeah, my sense about this is something either is slowing down your internet connection, or causing your computer to run so slowly that it’s taking forever to load images. I gather re-booting’s not helping. I wonder if you’ve picked up a virus or maybe a big ol’ greasy piece of spyware.
One way to confirm this is to try a different browser,
and see if the behavior is consistant.
tip for the future: hard drive partition and a bootloader.
I have encountered this with a PC from work before. The IT dept often loads patches and upgrades without my knowledge. These patches often include changes to my browser and privacy set-ups. Instead of trying to think through what makes sense, I usually find it is worthwhile to just check everything through to be sure.

If your computer is significantly slower, the others could be right about the internet connection being the cause. But you should hardly be able to access this site then.
Updates of your Win 98, anti virus, IE or fire wall software my alter your settings. As you say that the hunger site image don’t display but other images do I think your settings have been changed somehow.
The hunger site image is not hosted on this server and if the site hosting the image is blocket it will apear as a Red X. Check if any resent updates have been made, try to unistall them and see what happens.

My internet connection at work was intermittently slow today–incredibly slow–so maybe it was just some internet thing.
If there is a known malware threat, we’ll experience difficulty with everything outside the gateway, but if there is just a problem somewhere out there we’ll have sporadic difficulty. It was sporadic today.
It was sporadic today.
Oh, those darned spores. They get into everything. ![]()

Clear Internet Explorer’s cache/“Temporary Internet Files”. You do that somewhere in the Internet Options…dunno how it’s called in the english version of IE. In the german version it’s “Extras → Internetoptionen”.
That was a common bug of IE, one of the many that caused me to migrate to Mozilla Firefox.
