Whistlesmith Whistles

This is a spin-off from the most recent thread about low-D whistles. I’m curious to know more about Rod Brewer’s Whistlesmith line of whistles and fifes. He makes a PVC low-D as well as a bunch of other things, and sells them on eBay. He has good feedback, but I haven’t heard much about them on C&F, except for Shadoe42’s post, (he likes it for quiet practice). There haven’t been any reviews at all that I can find.
Rod’s website is www.whistlesmith.com, but the whistles sell cheaper on eBay. I’d like a really quiet, inexpensive low-D to play strictly at home. Anybody else familiar with these?

Unfortunately, this is a fairly frequent request that usually yields little or no new info. I’ve been interested in them for some time, but am not in a financial position to just up and buy one to try. Reviews have been promised, but I have yet to see one that I can recall. If you haven’t already, do a search for “Whistlesmith Whistles” here and you will see what I mean.

They look good though, and I like the guy’s site.

yep I like em for quiet practice. They are also good for small handed people. The construction is fairly good. The mouthpiece is moveable. You can actually adjust the length of the windway somewhat. I will try to get some pictures posted soon. But I am in the midst of moving to a new house so it might be a bit. Might poke me about it if I forget

I had one of the WhistleSmith high D whistles. Like shadoe says, well made – nice whistle. I did give it away after a few months to a good cause. Never tried a lower version – although the G has tempted me.

But for a Low D, at an excellent price – take a look at Daniel Bingamon’s practice low D in PVC. It has one of the best tones you can find, especially for the price he has on it. Don’t remember how quiet it is – my niece has it and won’t give it back!
