Whistle Makers: Where to get Delrin?

Hi Friends,

So many makers use Delrin for the fipple plug. Is it available in round stock like dowels?

I would like to find something other than wooden dowels for my copper whistles. (Wooden dowels don’t come in the right size anyway. I’ve been using oak.)

I don’t have a lathe, so if round Delrin stock is available, please tell me where.
Thanks,
Phil

Check your PMs, Oreo.

It comes in quite a few sizes. I use .500" rod for my fipples and need only sand them a TINY amount on the lathe to have them fit perfectly.

If there is a TAP Plastics near you, they carry it. The generic name is acetal. Delrin is a brand name.

I understand you can get tube stock over there too, lucky bastards!

Check out onlinemetals.com.

All ya gotta do is be willing to pay the shipping.

What tube size is good for a high-D?

I’m thinking the:

O.D. = 0.625
I.D. = 0.500
Wall = 0.062

???

Yep. .625 - .500 = .062

Allwais cheque you’re math and speling.

Jubilee Musical Instruments has a program called TWCalc that lets one really play with the dimensions before construction. Fun, too!

(.625-.500)/2 = .0625 actually. Remember, 2 wall thicknesses.

I typically buy 5 to 10 foot of delrin at a time. I get it from US Plastics in Lima Ohio. Most plastic suppliers handle Delrin or Acetal, it’s best to find a local supplier to keep shipping costs down.

If you specify to buy it in 5 foot segments, it can go out UPS and the packaging is cheaper. Longer segments have to be special delivery or by truck.

There is a Delrin bushing stock, which is pretty thick but I haven’t seen any tubing.

Krapp. My spelllling and mhath bight badd.
