I’ve been making whistles and native american style flytes for a few years using 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch copper pipe. I’ve been using a metal epoxy putty (which hardens quite nicely and is sandable) for the fipple block. In reading more and more on pennywhistle construction, I see that many people use Delrin® acetal resin for this piece. It would make my life so much easier (and more productive) if I could find a supplier for delrin in the appropriate size in a rod form. I’ve researched a bit, but I was thinking some of you more experienced whistle/flute makers could help me out.
Thanks,
G
!/2’’ copper pipe is almost 5/8’’ ID. And 3/4’’ is almost 7/8’‘ID. The place where I buy delrin does not have delrin in those two sizes. If you have a machine lathe 3/4’’ and 1’’ could be brought down to your size needed.
No lathe at my house. I’m not 100% sold on Delrin, just something in a rod form that sheds water well and is easy to sand and drill. I’m working on making a mold to try casting the pieces I need out of a porcelain resin dentists use to make caps for teeth. Very durable, smooth, and quite attractive. Still, If I could find a suitable material already manufactured in a rod or dowel form it would save a few steps. But I do appreciate the response, thanks!

I usually get mine here, in four foot pieces:

Acetal (generic=cheaper Delrin) seems to come in size multiples of 1/8".
What size are you looking for, and how much do you need? I may be able to send you a couple of smaller pieces. This material machines very well if you have a lathe available.
