Whistle Makers, What can you tell me about Delrin? (and othe

Here’s where I’m at. I made my first attempt to make a whistle with 1/2" copper pipe and an oak plug. It works, a little breathy and I can’t really play it because it hasn’t been coated with anything.

OK… I got me half a dozen 12" x 1/2" brass tubes from menard’s and I’m going to do some more experimenting but I need to know what kind of Delrin the other makers use for the fipple plugs and tubing.

I am also wondering what the pro’s and cons are of the different fipple designs.(as far as difficulty to consistently reproduce results. The easiest seems to be the clark original style, to just cut the hole and bend down the fipple a little, but I like the idea of bending down the top for about 3/4" after the fipple, like my Dixon.

what do you think?

Black Delrin is usually used for making whistles. Delrin is tradmark name of Dupont for a thermoplastic polymer known as Acetal.
The grade code is ASTM D-4181 POM111 w/Black.

White delrin can also be used but it is more sensitive to UV (not important unless you leave your whistles in the sun!)
Delrin made by manufacturers other than Dupont use the generic name ‘Acetal’.

There is also a product called Delrin II which is used in manufacturing - it is stronger that regular Delrin.

http://www.onlinemetals.com sells delrin and different kinds of tubing. check it out!
