Where to shop for whistles in Ireland?

I have the good fortune to travel this summer to the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, and London.

Does anyone have recommendations for shopping at cottage-industry-sized whistle makers/sellers in those areas?

Thanks much,
-Jeff

I’ll keep this thread alive, hoping to find the right reader at the right time!

Any leads on where to shop for handmade whistles in Ireland? I have to feed my WhOA  . I’m at 12 and growing :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks,
-Jeff

…just visited Ireland (first time) this past May! Don’t have much to recommend, just the store where I purchaced my whistle: Custy’s in Ennis, Co. Clare (I believe).

hey, this brings me back to my very first post. I was asking about whistle shops in london, and lixnaw wrote:

probably not what your looking for but maybe you might find something nice.,

I’ve never been there (tho always wanted to visit…)

but I’ve ordered by mail order and they couldn’t be more helpful!

About
The Living Tradition:

The Living Tradition music shop on MacCurtain St. in Cork was opened in 1994 and has built up an enviable reputation for its selection of traditional, ethnic and world cds and books. Although the shop was originally part of Ossian Publications, in March of 2000 it passed into the ownership of Tony and Ruairi O’Flaherty. While much has stayed the same at The Living Tradition, there have been some new initiatives. The shop now has a large selection of traditional instruments and also a substantial online presence.

You only live in Hampshire (an hours plane journey away) and you’ve never been here? - Shameful! :stuck_out_tongue:

Whats worse… is that I go to Kerry every year for 2/3 weeks in the summer (for the last 11 years!)… and we go via Cork! But the ferry arrives at 7am and I’ve never persuaded my family to hang around until the shop opens!

Its frustrating!

Paul

Ahhhh! - I thought you meant you’d never been to Ireland!

I’m off to Kerry this weekend (my parents live down there). But when I lived in London I used to do the 3 weeks in Kerry or Clare every Summer as well…

John.

What about Shanna Quay?

I’ll be in Valentia - Kerry in less than a month  Arriving on the 25th YAYAY

Paul

Thanks for the ideas, folks. I’m saving my Euros to feed the WhOA!

Anyone else have a lead to local whistle makers in Ireland (Republic & the North)?

O’Briain has a shop in Dingle at the craft village right outside of town (at least that’s my understanding) and Ian Lambe supposedly lives in Ennistymon. Both make low D whistles, and O’Briain does the “improved Feadog” whistles.

In Dublin, on a small street off of Grafton St, there’s a music shop called…I’m trying to remember…I think it’s McCullogh and (something…Piggot?). Anyway, they do sell whistles.

And Shanna Quay does sell whistles in Adare.

And there’s a small music shop (I bought my Dixon there) at the crossroads in a village called Ballyvaughn.

In Adare. A healthy crop of whistles including handmades.

The Roundstone Bodhran shop (in Roundstone…connamara I think?) has lots of whistles, some very unique looking ones, but has a NO PLAYING policy that could not be shifted, even when I said I wouldn’t buy one without trying.
