Well, My wife and I getting ready to take a trip over to Ireland (leaving on Sunday) and was thinking about checking out some instrument stores over there. Maybe pick up a few whistles and a couple of music books. Anyone have any recommendations? Our main stopping points will be Limerick, Cork, Waterford, Dublin, and Galway City but we will be driving all over the place so we do have mobility if there’s a good place that’s slightly out of the way.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Shannaquay is in Adare. Its a lovely ‘tidy town’ to visit, and Steve is very hospitable.
There is a Music store in Cork on MacAuthur, just above downtown. I bought my first tinwhistle there many years ago.
Just bumping this back up.
Custy’s music shop, Frances st Ennis Co Clare.
Probably the best range in CDs, books and instruments [and nice photographs] and nice people too, musicians themselves.
In Dublin, try McCoullough and Piggot, near Grafton Street.
The shop I like is in Galway, it’s called something like “The Four Corners” or whatever and is right in City Centre.
Waltons has a music store at 2 North Frederick St., which is pretty much downtown near O’Connell St. When I was last there they have a brass strung Celtic harp. I plucked a string and was tranposed to another time and place.

That’s Powell’s music shop, they have just about any tune-book, nice one. And they usually have a tape sale so you get nice tapes for two euro or silly prices like that. In the next street towards the quays is Mulligans for CDs and tapes.
Yeah, it’s a very good shop. The only thing is that they don’t seem to have a clue about the whistles they sell. About three years ago, before I started playing whistle, I actually bought a whistle there. I asked for the brand of the whistle, no one knew. Anyway, I bought it anyway, and finally found out it’s practically unplayable. I still don’t know what it is actually, it’s like a bad Chieftain. Will post a few pictures at one point.

I think this store is the Living Tradition, a good shop for trad CDs and some string instruments. I also found several nice tune books there.
Custy’s would definitely be worth a visit if you’re going to pass through Ennis. They have a good whistle selection.
McCullough and Piggott has or had the one piece Clare whistles last time I was there, and they’re a good whistle for the money.
If you head west from Galway into Connemara, there is a small town called Roundstone that has a music and gift shop. It is in an old monastery just on the edge of town. If you are there at the right time, you can watch the craftsman making bodhrans by hand. Kinda neat but really OUT OF THE WAY.
