If you go to mail.yahoo.com there’s always a picture of people playing on the beach or riding bikes or some outdoor activity and an advertisement about some Yahoo mail feature. What puzzles me is why? What the heck do these stupid pictures have to do with email?
I use Yahoo mail. Yeh, the picyures are crap, but I hardly notice them most of the time.
What I don’t like is the new Outlookesque interface. After a couple of days of that I went back to the old one.
I rarely use my Googlemail/Gmail anymore. I don’t like it. Apart from the hyped spying-on-yer-mails-in-order-to-serve-context-sensitive-ads thing, it just doesn’t seem as comfy as Yahoo.
I think the gmail interface is brilliant, better than most local email clients. I like the sorting of emails into strings, the keyboard shortcuts, the color coding, the chat integration, the ease with which you can manage addys, and particularly the powerful search function. Search, don’t file. =)
Same reason Cigarette billboards always featured people doing fun,
energetic things… “Smoking Salem Lights doesn’t keep you from
rock climbing and bareback horse riding on the beach!”
Likewise yahoo is trying to convince you that sitting on your duff in
front of the computer all day doesn’t keep you from leading an active
lifestyle, as long as you use Yahoo! brand email, the email with 30%
less tar!
I must not be in the “in” crowd regarding email. I have a friend who says he stores all emails. Good grief, why?!?! I delete them as soon as I’m done. I do have one file “Irish music” where I’ve stored quite a few emails with great stories, tunes, etc., and the obligatory “Bloo’s porn,” but that’s it. Do you all really have enough emails stored to need a search function??
I have hundreds of letters filed away there for posterity. If somebody is willing to take the time and effort to write to me I like to keep that letter.
The only ones I delete are the trivial "You going for a pint on friday night? " type.
I keep most of my Hotmails has well, with the same qualification.
A lot of my work email gets stored, and it’s handy to be able to search
through it when a question about a hardware defect comes up. It
works better than my poor memory.
I certainly don’t see the point for my personal email, but like you, I
may just not be hip enough.
Delete them? I just leave 'em to stack up… My Yahoo account has thousands in it. The only reason I archive the ones at work is that the network admin guy goes purple when my inbox goes over a billion zillion terabytes or something…
I suppose most of my emails fall into the “trivial” category (except Bloo’s “art,” of course). I’m still enough of a paper-thinker that if there’s an email I really want to keep, I print it. In gmail can you search by any word or just by sender name?
