How exactly is this working? Is Gmail invitation only or something? How did Chris, Dale, etc get the original invites?
Invitation only (it’s still in “beta test”). When you become a member and start using the service, they give you invites you can share, in an apparently random process.

Yes, gmail is currently invite only. Every once in a while we receive new invites to give out.

Don’t take it personally now
I don’t have any more invites to give out since I’ve removed my gmail account. Mostly, I just like the features better in yahoo mail which I’ve been using for several years.
