What free slowdowning software are people using these days?
For common tunes I’ll want to try out, I’ll go into Audacity, change the tempo and maybe the key, and save the recording. It is useful for playing along with a whistle tutor on a Bb fife and other things.
Ditto. Just to add, for a quick on-the-fly slowdown I’d simply use VLC, which also allows to playback and slow down streams like YT clips… but Audacity is far and away the best IMO.
When using Chromium (and presumably also Chrome) for youtube clips then there’ll be an option to slow down right there in YT. I don’t see that option when using Firefox. Don’t know if that has to do with flash vs. html5 or what.

Amazing slowdowner is pristine, even at extreme settings. Has to be heard to believe it. He has a free, lite version, but youll need to upgrade for usability. $15.
I use a Rockboxed iPod classic. I can choose how slow I want it and it also has A-B repeat, so I can play just a part of a tune.
I’ve been using Transcribe!. Not free but does the slowing down, sets up loops, adjust keys, provides “best guess” for notes and chords on demand, accepts a wide range of input formats. I’ve found it very useful.

I use (and created) www.youloop.io, allowing to slow down and loop YouTube videos. Also, if you create a loop for the A for instance, other users can re-use the loops created. For instance:

Yes, over the years I’ve used Audacity and VLC and other free tools for this, but on Gerry Strong’s recommendation I tried Transcribe! and was very happy to spend money on it. It really puts all the tools you’d like for puzzling out recordings right in front of you and makes them easy to use.
A little late, but would add that the App VexWarp is available for Chromium. Does a good job slowing down to 40 per cent. Shifts keys by semitones as well.

A thumbs up for youloop from me, interesting watchining the video slowed down as well for a bit of a clue on those baffling triplets that zip by…
Before long this thread will be four years old 
I find Sonic Visualizer to be really good. It has less artifacts than anything else I’ve been able to compare it to. Plus it has all the different visualization layers and harmonic analyzers.
It’s original purpose was linguistics, but it supports plugins so there are are a number of musical plugins (chord, beat, etc).
Probably not state of the art as my computers are old, but they still work: Play it slowly on Ubuntu (Linux) and Music Speed Changer on Android. Both free and simple to use.
For recording on the fly I have an app on my Iphone AVR Pro. I just sort of fell into it. It was $4.99 in the states. I didn’t realize until I had recorded and played back a number of tunes that it has a slow down function. I don’t believe it will change keys. But it does a good job of slowing down playback from sessions, etc.
I’m still using the Amazing Slowedowner on my computer since I have had it forever and it does the job.
