What Tune Are You Working On?

Sup Yaughal?

Fill us in on what chewn your working on and what drew you to it.

To kick things off - I’m working on “The Four Courts” played by Tommy Martin off The Cobblestones CD and “The Dear Irish Boy” played by Willie Clancy off “The Minstrel From Clare” CD.

Bye now,

Patrick.

A crazy version of the 9 points of Roguery.
A tune called Miss Cox Reel
Jig called “The Callender” and “Walk Out Of It Hogan”
Francie Donelly’s Reel
Hicks Hornpipe
Peter Street Reel
Stone In the Field
Asmolean House (all Reels)

and some other stuff I drag out when I remember it!

I’m working on the 5 part version of Lord Gordon’s. It’s just a generic setting that should work in a session. I haven’t heard any recorded versions of this tune in which a piper plays all 5 parts. McKeon does 4 parts and I think Ennis did 2 parts.

While listening to McKeon’s version of Lord Gordon’s it seems fitting to make Trim the Velvet my next project.

The March of the Kings of Laois and a pipes version of Cùnla. I’m also trying to work out ways of using the drones to accompany a singer.

In addition to trying to refine a bunch of tunes I have had for years, I’m working on a coupla nice hop jigs I got from bensdad.

Let’s see…

-Sean Buí and The Steampacket, both tought to me at the SF tionol
-The Bride’s Favourite, picked up from some awesome playing at the tionol
-Connaughtman’s Rambles, Mikie Smyth’s version
-Hewlett’s

…amongst a few others.

-Mike

Airs: Valencia Harbour, The Enchanted Valley
Jigs: The Lark’s March

I am trying to learn regs, and thought The Holy Land would be easy, but all the reg accompaniment I come up with is on the bottom keys, and its busting my a$$ to reach these fast enough. Any tips/tricks?

song of the chanter

Flogging reel, played by Willie Clancy (Minstrel of Clare)

I’ve put a one year moratorium on learning new tunes and have only been working on practising the one’s I’ve already learned. I was going nuts learning new tune after new tune only to forget how the heck it starts little later on. After getting to know about 500 tunes in the last 10 years keeping track of them all is a daunting task!!!

There are those whose repetoire includes thousands of tunes and I honestly don’t know how they do it. Computer chip implants perhaps???:-?

I’m in “month 8” of said moratorium, just working on enhancing chanter technique, learning to play regulators better and trying to keep how the tunes start in MEMORY!

So..that being said I’ve been going over Roaring Water by O’Flynn off the the Altan Blue Idol CD. A Lovely five part jig that.

Paul

I find just remembering how all the tunes start the toughest of all!

Good topic! You all have good ideas for tunes.

I’m also working on my yard…

Here’s my current tunes:

reels:

The Curlews, The Tempest, The Glen Road to Carrick, The Mossy Banks, Stony Steps, The Commodore.

jig:

The Woodcock (Hammy Hamilton’s.)

i usually hate these topics and refuse to post on 'em, but, heck…

Have worked a lot with these at the moment. Trying to get the tunes from my ears to my heart- without using the black dots on the paper. it seems for me the best way to REMEMBER the tunes later . Listening to the recordings from.

Johnny Cope ( from Ciarán Mac Feilimidh )
Lord Gordons/ Trim the velvet ( from Mckeon)
Butchers/ Nearys/ O’Sullivans ( 2 last ones from Mcnamara)
Connel/ Eddie Moloney( from Liam O’flynn)
Dinny Delanyes/ Frost is all over/ Munster buttermilk ( from Sean Potts)

Recently fell in love with An Ghaoth Aniar Aneas

…love the different ways u can mess about with a whole bunch of A’s in the first part, long and short rolls, etc

though not sure what to chase it with. Any suggestions?

Boyd

Have a wee listen to this version, first tune of the set:

The fourth, and final, in a series of uilleann piping performances from the Willie Clancy Summer School 2003 which are being featured throughout the month of June 2004. This week Ciarán Mac Feilimidh’s evening piping recital is featured. Ciarán is heard here playing his Andreas Rogge B set.
