I just received an email detailing some of the new “changes and improvements” to mp3.com’s policies.
It looks like things have gone from bad to worse there. They are discontinuing any chance of smaller artists to get paid for song playback. If any of you have/use an account with mp3.com, you may wish to reconsider and find a better host for your online music/CD sales.
There’s more to it of course, but I’m late for work now. Just be careful out there!
Sounds interesting, but I’m not sure I like their “unfair advantage”:
What makes us different from mp3.com- our “unfair advantage”
Being able to offer folks a free and easy way to get to know your music, as a digital download, is a great way to reach new ears, and here’s the efolkMusic advantage: you get the e-mail address of every “free-downloader”. What could you do with an e-mail list of several thousand people who have been listening to your music? You can at least sell them some flea collars or T-shirts, and maybe your next CD or download collection.
If you could distribute thousands of “singles” of your music around the world for nothing, why wouldn’t you do it? We had 200,000 page view in September, visitors from over 100 countries, and they are hitting the “free downloads” pages hard.
MP3 is the #1 search term on the Internet, and we are using it to bring people to the store. We believe, as Chuck D said, that “if I give away 10 million copies of a song, won’t I get something back?”
Our other secret weapon is that we are selective in our music- that is we only have the best music, not the most. This is a gourmet restaurant, not a food court. We are focused on serving our niche, and we are comparatively small- you won’t just be lost amongst 75,000 artists. People actually browse on our site, and check out new artists. No one’s going to run on to you at amazon.com if they’re “just browsing”, (or at your own website, for that matter) but you will be seen and heard if you’re on efolkMusic.
Someone on the clips and snips page has their music hosted on http://www.acidplanet.com/ - I don’t know if it’s any good. The site, not the music. Actually I didn’t hear the music, as I didn’t want to register to get to it.

Hey all…
This brings up something that I have been working on. As part of Gaelic Crossings (A website I am still finishing), I wanted to host a store for online music sales.
I believe the software I am using for the shopping cart enables downloads…let me find out if I can price it at zero and still have the download enabled. This would allow me to host both the MP3 sound clips, and the online store for CD’s, etc.

That someone would be me… but you don’t have to sign up with ACIDPlanet to listen to my tunes.
You only have to sign up if you want to download the full quality MP3 files or leave a review… and it’s free.
I’m quite happy with their hosting service, but they don’t pay artists or sell CDs.
Click PLAY instead of DOWNLOAD and give my tunes a listen… the more plays I get, the higher my ratings go! http://www.acidplanet.com/gary_humphrey

Just listened. Very nice stuff. I particularly like Hector the Hero. Keep up the good work.
