I’d like you guys to hear a few recordings my band, Grasta has recorded in the past few months, but the files are too large to email clips (biggest one is around 5.0 MB) and snips, and I can’t find anywhere to post them online.
If you have a web site, that would do it. (I’m guessing you don’t.) Then, I could post a link to your site. It’s a nightmare when people email me 3meg clips. They take forever to download and usually crash my wimpy computer. The other option is to use software to compress them down. A 3minute file will sound reasonable at 1meg. It’s still not ideal for emailing around, but I could post it and it would download in a tolerable amount of time.

Soundclick.com is one place. The caveat is that the tunes must be your own work or traditional tunes that are public domain. Covers of popular music are against the rules.
MP3.com lets you post three songs, but the same deal, must be original material or public domain. I have heard good things about Nowhereradio.com but have no first hand experience.
For songs where someone else owns the copyright, it against the rules to post them anywhere unless written permission is obtained.
There are some free webspaces around. For example: freewebs.com. The caveat with freewebs is that they don’t let you just link into your files, you have to create a simple Web page and link into that Web page instead. And, it’s very slow (probably throttled). You can pay ($50 per year, i think) and remove the limitations.
Usually you get some Web space too when you subscribe to some kind of high-speed Internet service.
I think Yahoo lets you create shared “briefcases”, but the people listening may have to have Yahoo ids too (i’m not sure).
Sounds like you just need to learn how to resample your tunes down. (basically what Tony said above…) Try using a smaller bit rate. By the sound of it, you’ve probably encoded your tunes in a super high quality format (192 or 160kbs) which is nice but not necessary. Also, encoding your tunes in mono will cut the file size in half. I use ITunes do do all of this. It is available for the Mac & PC for free. To tweak with the MP3 encoder setting you just need to go to “preferences” and play with your settings under the “importing” section.

I’ve used them myself and for a web project and they’ve been great.
This is pretty cool, but it does require you to have a domain name, right? Unless i’m missing something… Looks like you can register a domain with them for $6/year.
How does Linux play with windows machines? Would this have any bearing on how a website is displayed if I’m running XP? Or would it matter in the slightest as far as the data I’m sending to be stored on their Linux server coming from a windows box?
As you can tell, I’m also in the process of building a site and need a cheap host/domain. This sounds too good to be true - perhaps it is? 3 years for FREE?? and only a 6$ domain registration? There has to be a catch somewhere…
nope, you don’t need a domain name. For example, my webspace is at http://s87131043.onlinehome.us. It doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue however, so I was thinking about getting a $6 domain just to simplify it. Also, you don’t need any credit cards or other financial information, so you don’t have to worry about hidden charges popping up or whatever.
As far as the Linux, that’s just the operating system the servers run. It’s completely transparent to your browser and provides for some additional features and stability.
Hmmm, i guess i have to poke around more. I saw that .us thing, but my .us domain doesn’t resolve right now. Maybe i need to wait a couple more days for it to propagate through the DNS.
If you’re really cheap like me, you can get free domain names as well from http://www.dot.tk/. The island of Tokelau gives them out as a way to generate publicity for their tourism industry. After you sign up, you can go into the settings and disable the little popup ad they put on there.
http://www.acidplanet.com
I have a few tunes stored there, and the file size limit is a whopping 20Mb!
I have also never found any mention of a limit to the number of files you can store… a friend of mine currently has 68!
Best of all, it’s totally free… I have never found a better alternative to it anywhere on the 'net.
A friend of mine recently signed up for cable internet. He said he thinks he gets something like 100 megs of “storage space”. Is this the same as server space in that you can use it perfectly fine to host a website etc., assuming you get the domain name and have it re-direct to point at the site? How the hud do you make this contraption work?! Confused…
I finally got this set up. It’s a little confusing, and they are obviously using these free accounts as guinea pigs for this new hosting service they will start selling next year. However, considering what you get for free, it’s more than worth the hassle. This may be the best option available, for geeks. If you like using FTP and writing HTML pages, this is for you.
I think acid planet will work, but it says I have to convert the mp3 to a windows media player file, I looked all over windows media player to save my mp3 as the windows media player type and I can’t find anything that works. I tried “save as” but it doesn’t give me a set of options to choose what type I want to save the mp3 as…
Glauber, did www.1and1.com take your credit card info when you signed up? Is there any indication of being able to stop using the service if/when desired?
I didn’t give them credit card information (that’s really the only reason i didn’t sign in for a real domain name), so i guess they can’t charge me.
For whatever it’s worth, i wouldn’t use a free service for anything Really Important. For sharing recordings with Mom, it’s fine. Or for quick projects or test sites, as long as you keep a local backup so if the service is gone, you can move your site somewhere else.
ACIDplanet just wants members to upload downsampled Windows Media Audio versions of their submissions for streaming purposes… you can still upload a high quality MP3 file of the same submission for downloading.
Letting listeners preview a user submission in this manner before downloading the ‘real’ version greatly reduces the bandwidth usage of their server.
There is the slight catch that only other ACIDplanet members are allowed to download the high quality MP3 versions of other member’s submissions… but registration is free, and they rarely send you any e-mail.
Of course, you could always just convert your MP3 files to high quality WMA files and forgo uploading any MP3 files at all… then nobody would have to hassle with signong up with ACIDplanet to get better quality versions of your submissions.
Microsoft provides a free utility for converting media files to Windows proprietary formats, which can be downloaded here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/encoder/default.aspx
I look forward to hearing your music, Michael.
