I noticed someone on the net was using vinyl inside/leather outside for bellows. Does anyone have any experience doing this with bags?
I was thinking along the lines of bonding the vinyl to leather, glueing the vinyl along the edge to itself and hand stitching through both with a edge trim. I thought this would allow for a lighter weight leather (without the worry of pin holes) and a narrower seam on the vinyl with the look of a leather bag. Kick it around, kick me around, what do you think or already know?
It all depends on the type of vinyl you use. The first bag I owned was synthetic and lasted less than a year. It cracked along the top of the neck of the bag. This was replaced by another vinyl bag which was going strong right up to when I sold it 10 years later.
I make bags out of vinyl from http://www.spradlingvinyl.com/ , so far its the best I’ve come across and it has a soft leathery feel to it, not a slick plastic feeling like you get from many vinyl brands… Glue with 3m Marine adhesive 5200 quick cure in the red and white tube…
