Update: IrTrad melody in Kate Bush song - link to song

Update: I have posted the song in question. The MP3 can be downloaded here: http://www.aspstarterkits.com/music/Kate_Bush_Jig_of_Life.mp3

Hi there!

There is a Kate Bush song called “Jig of Life” on the second side of the album “Hounds of Love”. In the middle of the song, there is a sort of “Kate Bush-ized” traditional Irish jig. I used to think that this was an original piece, but read on the Internet that it is actually a traditional piece that was found by Paddy Bush and worked into the song.

Two Quesitons:

  1. Does anyone know what this traditional jig is called

  2. DOes anyone have the sheet music for it (or an ABC file)

Thanks!!!

p.s. It was actually this very song that made me aware of Irish music way back in the 80s. Kate recorded this song in Ireland.

Paddy Bush is a close friend of a friend of mine, John Ryan (not Sean Ryan). John is studying Irish Trad. Music (with whistle as his first instrument) at the World Irish Music Centre, in Limerick.

I’m seeing John next week, and I’ll see if he can throw any light on it. I might persuade him to ask Paddy.

Steve

 Thank you very much, Steve! I have some private whistle lessons coming up in New York. My teacher suggests I bring some songs I like that we can work on, and I wanted to try doing this one.

I’m planning to use my Mac to to slow the music down to learn it, but when I heard that it might actually be a traditional song, I realized I might be able to find the tab for it somewhere, and there might be other passages to it that weren’t used in “Jig of Life”

Cheers,

Here’s an interview which seems to suggest that it was written by Bill Whelan:

You nailed it! Great find, and what a fascinating glimpse at their creative process, too! Thanks, Chadd!
