Slightly OT-- Irish Medley

It’s not terribly OT, there is a whistle in this song… :stuck_out_tongue: Anyone know if the Dixie Chicks’ song Irish Medley is a traditional tune? If so, does it go by another name, or is it a combo of tunes?

TIA,

I think this will give you your answer.

Hey Tom! I did come across that link before I posted, but still wasn’t sure how “traditional” it really was. :slight_smile: I can’t find reference to the song anywhere else, so I was thinking perhaps it actually went by a different name… Thanks for looking into it though!!

After getting to listen to it again, it appears to be 3 songs… I think… If anyone else knows anything, please do let me know! :smiley:

I don’t know the cut, but the words on that webpage are traditional, more or less: The Jolly Beggarman, same tune as the Redhaired Boy. Standard session tune, and American dance/blue grass tune.

The Jolly Beggarman is definitely a traditional song. I can remember my dad singing it many, many moons ago. The words are slightly different in some verses but the tune is the same.

I’m confused. I clicked on that web site and then on Irish Medley. It says “instrumental”. But what I got were some word which appear to be the tune Handsome Molly.

I wish I was in London,
Or some other seaport town;
I’d set my foot on a steamboat,
I’d sail the ocean 'round

While sailing on the ocean,
While sailing on the sea;
I’d think of Handsome Molly,
Wherever she may be.

She rode to church last Sunday,
She passed my on by,
I saw her mind was changing,
by the roving of her eye.

Don’t you remember Molly,
When you gave me your right hand,
You said if you ever married,
I would be the man.

Now you’ve broke your promise,
Go marry who you please,
While my poor heart is aching,
You’re lying at your ease.

Hair as black as a raven,
Eyes as black as coal,
Her cheeks was like the lillies,
Out in the morning grown.

That’s more or less taken from the New Lost City Ramblers songbook. Some of those verses appear in other songs such as Loving Hannah.

Steve

PS the tune to Handsome Molly is not the same as Little Beggarman. The Chicks’ words look like they fit Beggerman.

In one of the posts above, I had said it sounded like 3 different songs…hence the “medley”. I think between Bloomy-pie and Steve I now have two of the names! Thanks guys!! I think the “instrumental” part comes in with the third (end) part of the Chicks’ song… I’ll see if I can get a clip of it to see if anyone recognizes it.

I knew you all would be able to help!! :smiley:
