Could anyone let me know the systems requirements for running this CDROM tutorial? Does it indicate on the CD whether it also runs on Linux? Or is it bound to e.g. Windows MediaPlayer, Apple Quicktime ???
Either post here (as it might be of interest for others as well) or let me know via PM.
I’m assuming that you are talking about the Mad4Trad Tutorial.
If that is the case, I just took a look at it. All of the files are html, or MPEG so it should work without a problem.
I loaded it up on my Linux machine (Mandrake v8.2) and was able to run all of the menus and see the embedded tunes (.GIF files). When I clicked on a vid, it tried to load but then the window would close. This is probably due to me running Linux on an ancient Pentium 90 however, so I imagine on a real computer it should work fine.
If the vids are crashing you may need another plug-in for your browser that can handle the mpeg format used. You might have to try several, or if you have an mpeg plug-in that has options, you may have to try different compression rates/schemes.
If you’re comfortable with ./configure; make; sudo make install, try getting a hold of mplayer and ripping all the codecs out you don’t need - it’s pretty slim if you do that. And you can run it off a command line, no need for X, so Ctrl-Alt-F1 is your friend (although obviously shut down X first, or it won’t help (really obvious, eh? (not to you-know-who))).
Another alternative is to get hold of some software to convert from mpeg to some uncompressed codec (I’ve never had to do this, so can’t be more specific), which will play faster on low-end hardware.
