Issues using CDs from "Essential Guide" on pc?

Hey there everyone! I just got the essential guide to irish flute and tin whistle, and wanted to listen while I was at work, but the CD doesn’t run in my drive.

I noticed the CD’s had a message about audio as well as computer software, so I can only assume some craptastic DRM is blocking me. I can’t even navigate to the CD rom drive itself in explorer or anything. It spins for a while, then gives up.

Anyone else have this happen? My computer is my only method of playing CDs. Any hints, or could it just be a bad pressing?

Thanks a bunch!

No, you shouldn’t have a problem with this. You paid for that material, and have a right to copy it for your own use. I have the same set, and have not had a problem doing this.

Hi -

The CD is burned with two “images” and should mount itself as 2 cd’s. one contains supplemental information, and the other has the sound files, if this is of any help. here are the instructions from the companion cd (assuming you are using Window):
Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP

  1. Insert the disc into your CD-ROM drive.
  2. The disc should automatically play and launch a web browser.
  3. If the disc does not automatically play:
  • Open My Computer from the desktop (on Windows XP, this may be available from the Start Menu).
  • In My Computer, open the CD-ROM drive.
  • If a web browser does not automatically open, open the index.htm on the CD-ROM.
  1. Once your web browser opens, you should be able to view the Companion CD Contents.

i hope this helps -

I know I have a right to copy it. In fact, to be snotty about it, technically the requirements of a cd to have that “Compact Disc, digital audio” label on it say that there can only be audio. No programs, no nothing else, just the audio. These have that mark, AND say they’ve got a program. They could possibly have a trademark case against them.

I’ll try it at home on linux, sometimes that does the trick. Was really just hoping that the pressing was bad, but since neither of the CDs work, I’m thinking that might not be the answer.

Boo, not being able to listen to music on my computer. But it SAYS you can, so I’m thinking I might have a conflicting driver, or windows update that made things go wonky.

Thanks reg!

I’ve tried this, but upon clicking the drive letter in explorer, nothing happens! It’ll spin the disc, or sometimes even blip up a “CD” type icon with the mouse cursor, but Windows just won’t recognize that it’s a real disc for me. I even tried right clicking and selecting auto play, and browsing there under the run menu. Nadda. The disc doesn’t get “mounted” I guess.

Like I said, I’m not ruling out some crazy no-run setting I’ve got on my version of windows, so I’ll try at home on various other platforms. I’ll temporarilly steal hubby’s mac if I’ve got to.

Thanks again!
