uilleann pipes teacher/reed suplies in Australia

do any of my oz compatriots know of any uilleann pipe teachers in the Melbourne or Geelong districts. Also does anyone know where I can get reed making supplies in oz especially Victoria. Would much appreciate any replies.

reeds australia will sell you chanter cane. any hobby/model shop should sell brass tube for staples and wire for bridles. that should about do it.
you can get one off purchases like shooting boards from NPU if you don’t want to make one yourself. well stocked hardware shop for the 1in gouge. most small places won’t sell imperial sized gouges in AU.

Hi…

I’d suggest you try and make contact with Patrick Lyons in Canberra (I believe last home city)…he’s got a pretty comprehensive understanding of the state of piping in Australia and is a teacher himself…

As far as supplies go, what do you need?
Cane from Australia tends to be extremely hard in my experience, unless youre harvesting from certain places on the side of the road. Just buy a box
from Medir like everyone else.
As for tools, they’re all pretty accessible. I have some gouges for sale if interested. Wax, string, brass sheet or tubing is all easily available from a big city like Melbourne…even Geelong I would think.

I had to buy my gouge from woodzone in the US. There was nothing in Perth at the time. I have bought cane from reeds Aus. I have not tryed it out yet, so I can’t be of much help. I have recently moved to Melbourne myself. I’m no teacher, but always happy to have some tunes.

PM me if you are interested as I don’t get on here that often.

I caught up with Pat Lyons at the NFF in Canberra back at easter. He’s moved to Adelaide for work. Jack Brennan is also in Adelaide and is an aswsome piper and a very good instructor.
FYI, if you don’t mind a drive to Gundagai, there will be pipe workshops at the turning wave vestival during September.

If you’re looking for instruction, then there’s also the Celtic Southern Cross Summer School, which is held near Kyneton, Victoria in January. There will be 2 pipe classes next year, an advanced class taught by Pat Lyons, and a beginner’s class, taught by myself. The advanced class is full already, but there are still places left in the beginners class. The Celtic Southern Cross website has more details.

Damien

Damien,

Is there much going on for people not in any classes? Is it worth a drive for some tunes or is it all class orientated? The website mentioned that there is a focus on tunes learnt at the school.

I am keen to start getting around to some events where there is some piping a foot.
