Kinda looks like a big eyeball from that angle.
I like the pic - online somewhere - of Padraig MacMathuna playing his Rowsomes; the soundbox has this slab of electrical tape over it. Too roary for ya, Pad?
Hmmm… I vote “1997” as that was the only year I’ve attended - I must have been sitting right in front of you when you snapped that, as I had that perspective of him when sitting on the floor - the schoolhouse was packed that day, and as I recall it was later in the week (Thursday or Friday).
I have a pretty good tape of that recital, but I could never remember the name of that piper. It’s my recollection that he also played the set in the background - a flat set - and I just remember how incredible his piping was; it was the best of that entire week, in my opinion.
Judging by the perspective I used at least a 105 mm lens but I may well have been at the other end of the room using the 180. He did play the b flats too. Can’t remember who else played. Was that the year they were doing the tv film, Sean Talty and Frankie Gavin outside and all that. Too nice weather to listen to pipes.
That was the year, indeed - RTE did some filming outside several days that week - which was sunny every single day, and in the low 70s (F), an incredible week for the fine weather.
I picked up my wife at Shannon on Friday morning in a pouring rain, and it didn’t stop for nearly 4 days! (Given that, the recital that Padraic gave must have been on Thursday…) But the outdoor recitals were a pretty good idea, given the fine weather that week - there were people sitting on the lawn and on the wall in front of the school, it was great. And those that were camping out caught a real break, too.
It was funny watching people as the days went by, it was very easy to tell who had been down to the beach at Spanish Point - their were as red as lobsters.
Gosh, that seems like yesterday - I’ll have to go dig out those cassette tapes and give them another listen.
Had to have been in '97, that’s the only year I’ve been to Willie Week… unless of course they repeated the media attention in 1999.
Of course, as I saw it in '97, I just assumed they always did that - Radio RTE and TG4 were broadcasting the outdoor recitals live - or at least they were recording them for rebroadcast.
Something else I remember about Willie Week in 1997… this is way off topic of piping, but something that has stuck with me ever since…
There was a house just up the road from the school, along the way to where my class was held. The weather that week was very nice, as we’ve already mentioned, but I’ll never forget that this older gentleman was outside painting his house during the week.
But it seemed that he’d only paint a small portion at a time - a nice yellow color, I recall. I sat and watched one afternoon as he’d load up his brush in the paint can at the bottom of the ladder, and up the ladder he’d go, about 10 feet or so, brush a few strokes, then down the ladder, where he’d repeat the process.
Apparently he was worried that the fine weather wouldn’t last, so he’d only have a gallon or so at the ready. But the funny part was that by the end of the week, his house was 4 different shades of yellow!
Don’t know why that stands out in my mind about that week, but it sure was a curious sight.
nice set of pipes . . tok . It seems to have a poping valve . It looks like it is in pristine condition , I would , GRAB UM , . though the chanters can be a bear to reed up , unless you have some idea of the style , and what the maker intended the pipes to sound like , and to be played for . pure vintage set . Go for it !! tok .
A nice set to make the feet move on a dark rainy night . Add a small rush to bring the chanter in tune .
