Tune Help

Okay folks, this one is a real head scratcher for me. I have a feeling that the structure of this tune suffered the loss of the players memory. I recorded this tune from a live session because I liked the sound and came home to learn it by ear only to find out it doesn’t make any structural sense to me. First of all, the player said it was a slip jig (had no name for it, of course) and when I went to learn it the last bar of the A part only had six eighth notes rather than nine (and there are no rests in the recording). On top of that, the tune was played differently each time thru so I could find no manner of consistency to see if one of the repeats was an error (and none of the variants made any more sense than this).

Secondly, when I actually wrote down what I was hearing, I discovered that the A part had eight measures while the B part had nine!? If any of you fine folks out there have an idea where this tune maybe came from or a source that could sort this out, I’d really appreciate it. I’d like to get a playable tune out of this as I do like its sound. I could just fill in with my own imagination to make it work but I’m interested if there’s a real composition floating around somewhere.

The first transcription below was what I got straight from the recording. The one below it shows what I did to the A part (third measure) to make it work (i.e., it has enough notes for full measures).

Seems to me this gets played in sessions around here, too, including that honking F-nat in the A part.

This is similar to the O’Neill’s version. Not sure what your mates are doing with the missing notes / extra measure. The tune does have a C part too, and your “extra” B measure is just the first measure of O’Neill’s C part.

Reminds me of a slip jig version of one of the Gold Rings.

Thanks MT. The recording I have does have a C part too but I stopped transcribing when I became stumped to see if I could locate a good source to show me that I wasn’t crazy

Thanks for the links!

thesession.org also pointed me to the fact that I have the Willie Clancy and Leo Rowsome recordings of that tune. Rowsome’s version seems pretty close to what I’ve got on my session recording so that will be a great source for me to fill in the blanks and get the tune sorted out.

Thanks again!

Well, I made it through transcribing the recording; thanks again, MT for the help in pointing me to other resources to fill out the few missing notes. Just in case anyone is interested, here’s my transcription of the recording.

Rather than writing in the repeat bars with first and second endings like I usually do for simplicity-sake I wrote out each part separately so that it would provide room to put in a couple of the nice subtle variations Flo had in the recording.
