[Traded]: Bryan Byrne Rudall

The Byrne has found a new home, thanks for your interest.

Hi Folks,

Well, this was a hard decision to sell it, but I think someone who maybe is younger and has more energy to put into their playing, will do this flute more justice, and make it sing as it can. It has a moderate back pressure
that needs to be driven by a stronger blow than I have most of the time. It responds with a lovely expressive voice then, and even though it can be played quietly, the more energy put into it really gets the best expressive tone, and it’s a lot of fun to hear and play it when it’s driven. I belive it has plenty of volume for session play (and a fully lined head), though I’m not a session player, and it can be equally nice for solo work.

I got this from Doc Jones (at the Irish Flute Store) just a few months ago, and wanted to put some time into it to find out how to play it best, and see what it could do. I’m very grateful to have been able to get to know it, and I’ve learned more about me and my playing from it too. Doc said recently he thought Bryan’s flutes are ones that you won’t outgrow, and I believe that-there’s a lot of variation of tone in it to find and make you happy, provided you like to push things a bit, and aren’t a weak or easy blower (though you can learn to do it, it’s just that it takes some time and desire).

I traded Doc for it at a price of $1300, but I will sell it now for $1100 plus shipping. These don’t come cheap, as new ones are now $1600, the last I heard, but it is one heck of a flute, from one of the top makers. Bryan apparently uses mostly all hand tools in their crafting, unlike most everyone else, and on top of that, he is a perfectionist. Thd flute is in quite excellent condition, in and out-it doesn’t look like it had been played all that much. Take a look at Doc’s picture of it below-that’s how it looks now. Even the original threaded tenons look great.

I will also consider trades or part trades, and I can take a credit card if you use PayPal, but would need the extra 3.5% they charge me to do it. Shipping will also be added at cost.

Here’s a little background on it that Doc passed on to me from the previous owner:

The original owner said he toured briefly with the singer Aiofe Clancy, and that the flute was made for him by Bryan specifically to be a beautiful back up instrument for Aiofe’s voice. There was some post-production tuning done on the flute. Forbes Christie at Powell custom enlarged the bore by .75 mm for a slightly stronger tone. The finger-holes were undercut and hand polished to balance the tuning.

It’s a beautiful flute, just looking for the right player. I will consider sending it out of the country if you understand the risks, but I will send it fully insured. Or if you like, I can send it to someone in the USA that you know, and they can send it out for you with less insurance if you so desire.

Please Email me (or PM if you wish) with your interest or questions by clicking on the email button at the bottom of the post. Thank you!

I sold a flute to Barry a while back and found him a completely straight shooter, simple to deal with, and meticulously honest. You can buy a great flute with confidence at a very attractive price, with no wait. What’s not to like?

Hugh

I have made purchases from Barry and it was always a good experience.I would jump on this offer if I had the $ available.

Agreed. Barry is a safe bet. No worries at all there.

If I didn’t have an awesome keyless Hammy, I would be on top of this Byrne.

Somebody jump on this awesome deal!

Gordon

Thanks guys, it’s very nice of you to say those complementary things about dealing with me; your checks are on the way!

And PS Jim (toughknot), nice to see you are still around here!

The Byrne is still available I have had some interest in it, but for various reasons, the offers didnt’ work out. I have now set a price on it at $1100 plus shipping.

I’m still open to a trade or other offers, and will ship outside of the USA under the right condtions as I’ve stated in my sale post above.

Thank you.

One last call, before I trade it away, or put it on Ebay. I would like $1150 for it, including insured shipping, and as before, in the USA only.

It’s a beauty!

swell flutes

If the bore and finger holes have been modified, how much of the flute is really Bryan Byrne’s?

It seems from the info the previous owner supplied to Doc Jones, that the guy had it tweaked to his own specific requirements, so without playing another byrne side by side you wont know how much of a difference there is, from the info on the web regarding byrne flutes, bryan wont let anything leave the workshop unless it is spot on, but the previous owner sounds like a pro player, and I am guessing that the widening of the bore and finger hole work hasn’t made a better flute, just a slightly different voiced flute, with alot of info on this forum regarding the Byrnes needing a very specific embouchure, and when you find it, its worth the wait, maybe the rebore and additional work helps that side of things, although I suppose you would need to work on the embouchure hole to make it slightly less demanding on that side of things.

hey listen to me I dont even own a Byrne, but I am having a custom head made for my delrin Paddy ward flute, a fully lined head should be ready January, but I’m not touching the bore or holes.

sponge

Good question, but the little that was taken off from the bore (.75mm) is not very much wood to remove, but I imagine it had the desired effect they wanted, which was more volume. And it was done by a professional who knew what he was doing. Check out his credentials.

And the tone holes were just undercut a bit-it’s called fine tuning, to make sure the flute plays precisely in tune after the bore was shaved (which would affect tuning somewhat). I’m sure Bryan sent it out in tune too.

I doubt the voice was changed much at all besides the slight volume increase, which Bryan did on his flutes a couple of years after this was made. There was no mention of tweaking the embouchure hole-that is the heart of the flute, and done by a master flutemaker to begin with, so no change was necessary.

It’s got a lovely voice, and all the volume one would need, if you know how to get it out of it. It’s still not a flute most can pick up and play the best from day one, but it’s worth getting to know how to play it. It really can sing when you’re playing it right!

I’ve lowered the price, will still consider reasonable offers or trades, and will ship out of the USA-see above.

pm sent

Still available, no direct offer to buy as yet. (in response to the above pm sent) by sponge.

For the record, I’ve had numerous dealings with Barry both as buyer and seller. I’d sell him a house on a handshake.

Also, I’ve played this flute. It’s outstanding. It’s a steal at $1100.

Don’t be dumb. Buy this flute.

Doc

Right. This is 500 bucks less than new.

Yup, no wait…already played in…what could be bad?

If I weren’t in a cash crunch (too many inventory purchases this month) I’d snap this up at this price for re-sale through the store at $1300ish.

Again, good opportunity for someone not to be dumb here.

Doc

Also no waiting list–for Bryan that would be a
considerable wait.

Brad Hurley plays one of these; praises it to the sky.
They are said to be the contemporary flute
truest to the 19th century Rudall. They’re
not easy to play but they are very satisfying.
They make you better on the flute.
