Keyless Byrne in D with Boehm case; $1050 – (sale pending)
This is a sleek blackwood Rudall-type design that has an amazing tone through both octaves. It is a gem that has medium sized holes and has been played regularly for session and solo work – plenty of volume. It has been meticulously cared for and is a top notch flute with silver rings/tuning slide and thread-wrapped tenons. Bryan’s flutes are well known for excellence in both craftmanship and playability – I hate to part with it!
5-Key blackwood Ormiston in D (#324) with wooden case; $1150 or best offer – (sale pending)
This is a medium holed Nicholson-inspired design with post-mounted keys. It has all new cork and pads and has been meticulously cared for. This model has a conventional oval embouchure and is a great all-around flute with good volume and a nice hard low D. Good solid session workhorse. A very affordable way to get a quality keyed flute with no wait!
The Byrne was made in the late 90’s and the word from Bryan is
that it more closely resembles the current model with medium sized
holes. It offers plenty of volume along with a really nice second octave.
The Ormiston has Bb, C, G#, short F, and Eb keys.
The single flute I am keeping is a 5 key blackwood Hammy that is my primary performance flute.
I really hate to part with any of them, but it’s got to be done…
Can I put a word in for George Ormiston. I’ve only recently aquired no. 559 which is a 6 key ( same as above but with long F as well ) Left handed. George made this for me at no extra charge for being a lefty. It’s a beautifully crafted instrument and sounds really well. I’ve played a keyless Hammy for the past couple of years and this flute compares very favourably. If the one listed is as good then get yourself a bargain !!
Let me say that Bryan Byrne’s flutes are very well thought
of indeed, they are said to be very good Rudalls.
Also the new price is 1600 dollars–Bryan leads
a monkish existence in Vermont polishing flute
bores. We’ve had lengthy discussions about this
and the general feeling is that the price is
fair because the quality of the workmanship
is extraordinary.
Well, I’ve checked with Black Bear and, in effect,
you can now get something like what Bryan is
now making, except for about 550 dollars
less, including a good case.
This is a Good Deal!
I would buy this flute myself except that
I have ordered one from Bryan Byrne. Jim
The Byrne is “under contract” at the moment – should it fall through I will make an announcement. Thanks to everyone who inquired – I will keep you in mind.
The Ormiston is a great value for a keyed flute – make an offer and let’s make a deal!
