First off, I’d like to say “Hello!” - I’m new to this forum - I’ve been lurking for a few days, but as usual I just can’t resist posting…
My name is John, and I live in Dublin, Ireland. And I’ve been driving the neighbours up the wall with a Waltons D whistle since April…
I was wondering if anyone is attending any of the Trad Summer schools in Ireland this year? - I know there are a few around. There’s one in Miltown Malbay I was going to drop into for a few days (well, I want to check out the sessions as well…) In fact, I’ve been planning a bit of a Trad roadtrip …
I’ll be coming over there in September, too late for the classes. If I were going to be there in the summer, I’d surely go to Willie Week. Or maybe Cee Gunning’s school up in Sligo. I think it’d be less crowded there.
There was a gathering of Chiffers at Miltown for WC week in 2003, but the poor Dollar exchange rate has made 2004 to expensive for most.
2005 is looking brighter, by then I might be good enough on the fiddle to benefit from classes and not embarass myself, and have attended a few set dancing classes so I can enjoy the Ceilis and not break too many toes.
I’m past the ‘embarrassment’ stage. If ever you’ve been through the hell of trying to learn Golf, you’ll realise you can’t sink much deeper into the despair of thinking you’re never going to learn this thing…
Still, I suppose you can’t beat the embarrassment of being surrounded by virtuoso trad musicians aged 10 who can play their instrument and their gameboy at the same time…
Golf…my other obssession. In my experience, I have not encountered an activity so agrivating and yet so exhillerating at the same time…beyond playing trad of course. Someday I will make it over for willie week. Good luck on your trad road trip johnan, and don’t forget to keep your head down out on the links.
It’s a traditionnal music summer school, where they have music classes for a few days, usually with sessions and concerts. They’re festivals, most of them, which means it’s also infected with tourists
