The New Moon in the Old Moon's Arms

What’s new about it. It looks pretty old to me.

That’s a lovely pic.

Late late yestreen I saw the new moone,
Wi the auld moone in hir arme,
And I feir, I feir, my deir master,

(I couldn’t find a Youtube clip).

I went out in my back yard tonight, and the moon looks pretty much like the photo, only with a little less Earth glow. From looking at the astronomy data, I see that the phase of the moon tonight is between new moon and the first quarter. Even standing in the middle of a large city with airplanes in their landing patterns overhead, the details of the moon with binoculars are magnificent. I suppose that you would say that this is the new moon in the old moon’s arms, although, if I were writing the script, I would have it as the old moon in the new moon’s arms, which seems to make more sense.

It’s an excellent time for stargazing right now! Have you looked at Jupiter with your binocs, Doug? (though lately it seems to be too bright for me to see the moons through mine. Gorgeous anyway, though!) It’s a good time for planets.

Just so, Doug. Jez Lowe and I agree with you.

And so does Sir Patrick Spens (above).
