In the graveyard, no less. Nice pic, Denny. If we could collectively comprehend the beauty of our view of the heavens (religious for the Universe), we all would be up on our feet and clapping our hands.

Sailor Moon meets Tuxedo Mask dude.

PS Nice photo.
Venus and the moon like that are my favorite celestial image–the luminous soft globe of the moon and the piercing brilliance of Venus–femininity idealized, maybe. I read something once that said Venus is sometimes so bright it casts a shadow.
Lovely picture.

That is, in fact, true. There are some megalithic structures in Europe that were used to gauge time in long and short term ammounts (as much as 40 years, or one complete Venusian cycle as viewed from Earth) by the shadows and light it would cast at certain times.
One such megalithic site is Bryn Celli Ddu.

The moon and Venus would both cast daggers of light through a slit in the chamber onto this pillar

Correlation between the markings on the pillar and the daggers of light would enable people to determine accurately the passage of time, seasons, ages etc.
Thanks, Tyler. Very interesting!

My next door neighbour and I were discussing (and admiring) precisely this celestial scene a couple of nights ago—especially vivid in the southern hemisphere right now. I joked that if Venus got any closer to the cresent moon we’d have the Pakistani flag. (No, southern skies aren’t green; give me some poetic license.)

Well Doug, I’m sure these folks would if they could. ![]()
