Actually, neither. The whole event was staged by NASA in a warehouse in SoCal.

In the Northern Hemisphere, the moon waxes to match the right hand (held in a crescent, or like the letter D) and wanes to match the left hand (held in a crescent, or if you prefer, the letter C).
In the Southern Hemisphere it is the other way around.
According to the blurb, Venus is the brighter body.
Thank you! The one time I was south of the Equator that’s what I thought I saw, but then wondered if I’d gotten confused. It’s been known to happen
