Thanks Wynder

Hiya Rob, just want to say thankyou for your “whistlethis” site. I’ve been learning whistle for about 6 weeks and , for newbies like me , it’s heaven! I’m hopeless at the technical stuff and , when I read the instructions for posting a recording, my eyes glazed over…must get myself into the 21st. century! However its great listening to the differerent interpretations…really helpful.

Same here! I haven’t liked my recordings enough to post yet, but it feels good to be learning tunes in synch with others who give each other feedback. That was truly a great idea, so thanks!

I second that. This really helps me have a focus for learning tunes and also get some ideas of how other people of different levels play them. There should be a site like this for all instruments

Agreed. I’m also new and like the idea of making a goal of learning a specific tune every two weeks.

I had never recorded myself either, but with Audacity (free) and a microphone that came with a Spanish program (also free), I was able to make a passable recording. And posting to the site was about as easy as you can get. You just click “Upload Yours”, and choose the file from your hard drive. Eazy Peazy.

As for not being good enough to post, come on. I’ve only been playing somewhat diligently for about three months and I’ve posted both previous tunes and will be posting Si Bheag Si Mhor soon. I’m a newbie and consider myself as such.

And for Pete’s sake, have you listened to the tune posted by Whistlin_Thanks? It’s under Si Bheag Si Mhor, but it’s actually Calliope House. That’s about as beginner as you can get and he/she posted it. Very admirable - that’s the coolest thing. If people waited until they were good, it wouldn’t be nearly as much fun.

The cool part will be to see obvious beginners progress to capable intermediate players. You have to post at each level along the way in order to see the progress.

And if it makes you feel any better, with both Silver Spear and Calliope House, it probably took me 30 takes and over an hour to get each one of them recorded. Something about knowing that microphone is on…

And I want to say thanks also to Wynder for the site. Hopefully your skin is a little thicker after the last couple of days over there.

Thanks,
Jason

Thanks a lot, guys…

I appreciate the kudos and I’m just supremely happy that folks are actually getting something out of this. I do think it would be stellar that, in 2 or 3 years you could find someone who started learning on the site and be able to listen to their songs over the course of that time and actually hear the progression they’ve made. Hopefully, that’ll be a distinct possibility

Regards,
Rob

This brings up a point. It would be nice to be able to click on a
person’s login name, and find all the tunes they have recorded.
This way, if you wish to emmulate how one particular person
does rolls, for example, you can study all the tunes they’ve
contributed.

It’s silly at this point, with only 3 tunes, but once you get up to
30 or 40, this might be pretty useful.

You can currently do this with your own account and it wouldn’t be hard to add for other people. As we get more tunes going, I may add that in.

Oh, I just noticed the “My Tunes” link! Cool!

As long as you’re taking feature requests, can I please have a RSS or Atom feed?

Yes, thanks, Wynder. Not only is your site fun, it’s helpful as well.

I’m just beginning to learn to play the whistle and have a long way to go, but I don’t think I’m as clueless now as I was before I swallowed my pride and posted my rendition of Si Beag, Si Mhor and received some suggestions on how to improve my playing.

Listening to other players and reading the critiques they receive has really helped me too.

I think it’s a great site all the way around.
