I suppose this might be better placed in the teachers wanted forum, but I don’t think many people read that one, so I’ll ask here. Are there any Irish flute teachers in the Oxford area? London would also be OK as I might be able to get to the city once every couple of weeks or so.
Goretti Anglim in E London. Also check with the various Comhaltas branches in London. Someone taught Orlaith McAuliffe! (Maybe she’s teaching now herself, though I don’t know whether/where she’s off to Uni this autumn.) Orlaith runs a Facebook Page for the E. London Comhaltas Branch.
There’s a W London Branch which should be more accessible from the Oxford angle: http://comhaltas.ie/events/detail/west_london_seisiun/lang/en/ That link gets you to the main Comhaltas site with click-throughs to info on all branches in Britain - none in Oxford - closest bar London ones seem to be Luton, Bedford & Northampton. But could be worth contacting their organisers as they may know folk…
Dunno otherwise about Oxford - but I understand there are good sessions in various genres in Oxford (not just ITM), so finding and going to those and asking would seem a likely starting place (no, I don’t know anything specific about them, sorry). My young friend (& former pupil) Tom Scott is about to go off to Uni in Oxford and will doubtless be looking for sessions himself. What level lessons are you in need of?
I’ve only been playing about a month, so the intermediate stage of “absolute beginner” I think… Thanks for the info, I appreciate it. I’ll be at uni at Oxford also, so perhaps I’ll run into him.
I doubt Mr Tansey could have been Orlaith’s regular teacher - has he ever lived in London for an extended period, let alone in recent years? (Besides, she can play in time and in tune… ) However, I know Orlaith has been to all sorts of courses and workshops in Ireland throughout her young life, so she may well have had some lessons from him.
Just another thought for the OP - there is a guy currently selling a whole bunch of “our kind of flutes” on eBay who is from Reading. From his collection for sale, he clearly knows his flutes, though I have no idea about his musical credentials. His ebay ID is “sebknight”. I don’t know if that reflects his real name, nor does it mean anything to me if it does. Anyone else? As a long shot, it could be worth contacting him via eBay and seeing if he can help.
Thanks for the additional leads. I’ll contact the West London Comhaltas branch and see if they can refer to anybody. Would be glad to meet up with Tom also at some point.
