Taylor style bass regulator

Hello,
How difficult is it to convert a bass regulator (the straight type that goes over the crook of the arm) into a Taylor style bass reg’ with a U tube.
Is it a very difficult operation or could a pipe maker do it without carrying out any major surgery to the pipes.
Your comments (plus or minus) would be greatly appreciated.
My reasons are based purely upon functionality i.e. more compact for sessions and such.

Easier enough for a maker used to doing this this style - two come to mind in the UK - Brian Howard (Sheffield) and Chris Bayley (Surrey).

I would imagine it is a question of major surgery but I suspect that it could be done. You shouldn’t try it yourself.

definitely major surgery - it would of course either destroy or replace the existing top section of the regulator bore. It requires a different location and setup for the air feed as well.

Not really recommended IMO, and if attempted at all should only be done by the original maker, unless you are prepared to do a replacement of the bass reg and possibly the mainstock as well, rather than a “conversion” of the old parts..

A conversion is not a problem and am carrying out one at the moment on a set by a maker who although still living is no longer in the making business.

Yes it is major surgery and ideally should be carried out by the original maker.

The ‘operation’ (like any modification should be) is completely reversible as a new folded bass assembly is made with the air feed in exactly the same place as there is a connecting tube that feeds air to section carrying the reed. The original straight bass bar and wooden separator is retained by the customer so it can always be switched back.
