I know this was talked about before but could you give me your thoughts (both aesthetically and practically) on the conventional bass reg vs Taylor style wrap around. Which would you choose if you had thje choice?
If it were made by the Taylors, then I’d go with the Taylor style. 
No I mean if you had the choice if a new set were being made or a 3/4 set upgraded by a current maker for example?
I have always liked the look of Taylor pipes, someday I wouldn’t mind owning one. So, yes, I would go for that look. As far as design stability or how well they function as opposed to other key styles…I can’t comment.
i prefer the wrap around (doubled back) bass reg. i have two sets with that currently, and a third straight. i even had my first set converted over to this style since i find it more comfortable to play, and easier with it to get around the regs. the straight bar laying across my arms was quite uncomfortable to me, and awkward.
I don’t mind the straight bar over my arm, but I suspect you could get a much more compact case for your set with the wrapped bass reg. This would also make for less disassembly for putting them in the case as well. Just a thought.

It,s hard when you have to make that final decision of exactly what you want when your ordering a set of pipes . So much to chose from ,so much money to pay, will I still like my choice a year down the road ?

I’d recommend that you try playing both styles, if at all possible.
You might find out that your left arm has a tendency to pull the upper part of the bass reg towards your body as you play - and when that happens - even a little bit - it means that the opposite end of the entire collection of ‘stuff’ begins to kick out away from you.
My first set was the ‘straight pipe’ bass reg. These days I play a Seth Gallagher set which has the 180 degree bend in the bass reg, and I have found that for me, the body of the pipes sits still, as there’s no pulling towards me.

I’m about to add the bass reg. on my Gallagher. Seth really favors the wrap-around.
Michael Vignoles visited Knoxville this past summer, and he was playing a real Taylor flavored set with the paddle keys and wrap-around bass reg. of his own make. :adminok:
I find the old American pipers like Touhey, Carney and the Taylor bros. an extremely interesting subject. I still gravitate towards a Rowsome style instrument though.
I’ve heard that the wrap-around makes getting around the regs. easier.
Mechanically speaking, the Taylors really had some neat ideas and directions in their heads!
